Bring it back...

Bring back birching for young tearaways that terrorise council estates and vandalise graveyards, castrate paedophiles and bring back hanging

So says Tim Metcalfe - IT consultant from Weetwood, Leeds, who hopes to become an MP at the next election. He announced these ideas to raptourous applause at the Tory Conference today.

So what are your views?

He`s got a point but it`ll never happen - he`s clearly living in the past - rubber hosepipe would be a much better modern alternative to birch :D

I don`t think that the birch has ever been an option in anywhere except the Isle of Man and it was only stopped there because of some European ruling. Maybe a spell of "forced labour" like litter picking and cleaning up our streets generally would do the trick.

No, all "forced labour", "meeting the victim" and crap like that just makes these twisted little souls even more twisted. Conscription would just mean having a generation of young thugs who could kill little old ladies with their bare hands. Even the birch would be shrugged off by pikey types as being a rite of passage. The fundamental problem is we`ve bred nearly four generations of kids with no fear or respect for authority. We need a bottom line change in attitude in this country. Not towards lawbreakers but how we all conduct ourselves and deal with others. Pipe dream? Probably, but it`s the only way things could improve.

Agree wholeheartedly with that. But where and when do you start, in the home, in school ? Teachers blame bad parenting, parents blame teachers forgetting that teachers can`t so much as touch the kids who misbehave.

I agree with most of what you say. The biggest problem is that most people who behave in an anti-social manner believe that they won`t be caught and unfortunately in most cases it seems to be the case. It`s because of this that I`m in favour of zero tolerance. However, I think that for those who are caught and punished by community service, they should carry out the work publicly(for example litter picking) in the hope that they will be embarrased into a different behaviour pattern.

In modern Britain, responsibility is a swear word. :(

I believe in harsh punishment. The law seems to fit the vilains and not the victims. The way I see it, is that anybody can become a vilain (it`s a free world after all), but it is like a game, there are rules and sometimes you can lose. Look at the guy who was breaking into Mr Martin, the farmer, he knew it was breaking the law, and lost the game (at the highest price and maybe a bit of an extreme one, but here you go).

In my younger days I came close to take the wrong path, got arrested, this was in France, and saw the gendarmes in action and believe me they put me off for the rest of my life. I did not complain, I broke the law, lost that game and paid the price.

Maybe we have gone too far with that PC stuff, but surely there is a way to stop good honest citizen to pay the price for those who refuse to play the game by the rules.

I have not got any solutions, but it must be some more clever people that should know how to respond to this wave of criminality.

Yes, I think the law should get a lot, lot tougher. I say bring back the death penalty (although I would say lethal injection or firing squad, not hanging), and yes, punishment for all my fellow toerags (I ashamedly deem them `fellow`) should be brought back too.

There`s a much easier way.

If you get caught for ANY offence you will be forced to paint your entire house barbie pink. The length of the sentence is how long you`ll have to repaint it every year to keep it nice & pink until your finally handed a bottle of turps and a rag.
