Page 1 of Oil Filled Radiator VS Convector heaters

Just moved into a 2 Bedroom Terrace house but neither of the 2 rooms have any central heating. I`ve seen loads of heaters in places like Argos, Comet, Currys etc at prices from £29.99 up to £100.00.

I have 2 questions:

1. Is it true that Oil Filled Radiators are cheaper to run than Convector heaters?

2. Does anyone own any of these type of heaters, if so any thoughts?

I have an oil filled Delonghi Heater and it is very good it heats up quickly and as it doesnt have to continually power a fan it doesnt use as much electricity however the only draw back is the oil does smell a bit and you may need to ventilate the room a little to be honest it doesnt bother me and its better than trying to hear the TV over a convection heater. It also has a timer so you can set it to come on before you get up in the morning .

We lived for 6yrs without central heating (I`m feeling cold now thinking about it). I can`t comment on the running costs, but we found that convector heaters provide quicker heat, but tend to make the room stuffy. We had a couple of cheap oil filed radiators and a small fan heater which we could carry from room to room for a quick "heat-up". Whatever you buy, make sure it has a thermostat, so it will keep a constant temp.

Also take care with electric heaters, a carelessy thrown piece of underwear landed on one of our heaters (I don`t want to go into too many details here ;) fortunatley we smelt the burning before things got out of hand!

Tutchy - your oil filled radiator shouldn`t smell of oil, are you sure it isn`t faulty?

Convectors, especially in bedrooms or when you first switch them on after the summer can give off an alarming singeing fluff smell.

You might also want to consider a storage heater - we have one in our hall way, and it heats up over night when the electricity is cheaper (economy 7) and stores the heat in blocks inside the heater which is released during the day. Works perfectly and keeps the house nice and warm, but the only drawback is the lack of control - there`s no off button once the heat is stored. You can close the vents, but it still gives out a lot of heat.

A lot cheaper than either a convector ot oil filled radiator.

Delonghi ones smell a bit when you first get them, they advice you to keep it on for full power for 8 hours in a ventilated room when you first get it. It will smell then but should improve.

Get one with EEC, it chooses the lowest power setting whilst keeping the heat constant.

And no I don`t work for delonghi, although commission will be nice.
