RE: LCD dead out of the box, replacement rights advice needed urgent

Hi Jimbo,

Comet have said if we return it , they will fully refund. They are not interested in offering any gesture towards helping us get it back and not interested in why they said it would be OK to take it off the mainland. I guess we just need to be grateful that they will refund.

OH is just going to return it when he`s next back (couple of weeks), the ferry is as nearly as dear as the telly, so no point making the trip specially, if they object, there may be a commotion on the sales floor :¦ .

He`s bought a cheap telly on the island - Tecknika, which we`ll be stuck with as a bedroom telly when I finally move over, but never mind.

Cheers for all the advice.

RE: LCD dead out of the box, replacement rights advice needed urgent

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

When we bought it, the Isle of Man address went on the receipt. We even spoke to the duty manager to confirm that this would be OK.

OH has spoken to Comet this morning, they were really pleasant, but the manager at the Comet store shouldn`t have said that taking it off the mainland would be fine, because apparently it isn`t and now recovery is a problem. The guy at customer service has said that he will do his best to sort the situation and get back to us.

We confirmed that the warranty does require them to collect and so does the sale of goods act for that matter. They aren`t disputing that from the mainland, it`s the strip of Irish sea between here and there thats causing the problem now :¦ It`s not really as if IOM is the back of beyond, we do have DHL etc!

Jimbo - the tv won`t even tune, no controls work, it takes about 10mins for the screen to spring to life, but then it`s just a mass of lines. Can`t access any menus and it doesn`t register anything plugged in - dvd, wii etc.

OH is a bit down, stuck by hiself in crappy rented accomodation and now no TV to watch either :( .

RE: LCD dead out of the box, replacement rights advice needed urgent

Hi, thanks for the link. It pretty much quotes the sale of goods act, which is really woolly in terms of actual timescales.

Sale of goods act says you are entitled to a refund if you notify the retailer quickly, but there is no definition of quickly, it may be as little as 7days. We can`t get the tv back in 7 days, altho` he has already notified Comet. Theoretically it is their problem to pick up the tv, but whether they will or not?

We made it quite clear when buying that we were taking the tv off the mainland and bought an extended warranty (given my tv history!) and were told it would be no problem.

LCD dead out of the box, replacement rights advice needed urgent

OK, obviously I`m the black widow of TV owners.....as another one bites the dust.

OH made an impulse purchase on Sunday of a Toshiba LCD from Comet ,to take back to the Isle of Man.

On setting it up he found there was no power to the tv. Toshiba posted him a new adapter, TV now has power, but screen is a mass of lines and won`t tune, no controls work.

On phoning Comet, they`ve told him he has to accept a repair and wait 3wks. I thought if an item was dead out of the box, you had 28 days to get a replacement. Have looked on trading standards and can`t seem to find if this is law.

As the tv is now in the Isle of man, we need to know if OH can risk buying another tv out there in lieu of getting a refund when he returns to the UK (which will be within 28days)

Many thanks

RE: fault with my lcd, what can i do next?

http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/consumers/consumers.cfm

Put your postcode in the above link and you`ll get the phone no. for your local trading standards office, they`ll be able to give you advice on your legal rights and the sale of goods act.

I would also give JL a ring and let them know that you are unhappy with the service you have received, keep it polite though. Empasise the 2wk wait for a phonecall, as they pride themselves on returning calls within 48hrs and the fact that you`ve been patient and fair in giving them x attempts at repairing your television. Invariably the person on the phone doesn`t have any authority to handle theses things, but will pass it "upstairs" and promise to ring back. ask when they will ring you back, if you are going to be out then ask them to ring back at a certain time. I`m stressing the keep it polite....our problem was solved, when one of the operators took pity on our tale of woe and really pushed the issue for us.

In the end I actually got my TV replaced and was refunded £100, as the tv was now on sale £100 cheaper! I never expected that.

RE: Dual sim cards

Thanks, I`ve blagged a 2nd phone from a mate, looks slightly obnoxious carrying two phones around, but it`ll do for now :¦

The irony is Manx Pronto and O2 are the same company......why can`t firms just simplify things?!

RE: fault with my lcd, what can i do next?

I`d push John Lewis, whatever the fault, the TV has to be fit for purpose, obviously yours isn`t - is your JL warranty not five years? Your contract is with JL, not Sharp, so really JL should be doing the chasing up, not expecting you to sort it out thru` Sharp.

We had problems with a Samsung LCD bought from JL, screen failed, part couldn`t be found within a reasonable time limit. Eventually after we pushed, JL replaced the TV.

You could also phone trading standards, we got advice from them on wording correspondance etc, should things have escalated with JL.

Dual sim cards

I need to be able to switch between 2 mobile networks - Manx Pronto and O2, I`ve been looking at dual sim holders, but can`t make head nor tail

Some need you to cut your sim cards, have read that others can reduce your battery life by upto 70%.........

Is there anyone out there knowledgable about this type of thing? As obviously I `m not :/ I`ve got a Motorola V3 btw.

Cheers.

RE: John Lewis - superb service.

Well, thought it was only fair to John Lewis that I post a follow-up. After 8wks John Lewis offered a credit note, snag was that I`d have to go into store to order a new tv and we live miles away. Cue a row with DH over who was going to trail into Nottingham to sort it.out.

Samsung sent us a letter saying there was a credit note enclosed, no credit note was enclosed. JL ummed and ahhed over this, usual story, there`s no-one there who can answer your questions, but we`ll call back in 48hrs.

Then out of the blue we received a phonecall saying a new Sammy would be delivered the following week, if that was convenient. It was...obviously :) Even more out of the blue we also received a £100 refund on my card, we assume as the Sammy was now £100 cheaper than when we first purchased, tho` JL didn`t explain this, just refunded.

So how do I feel about JL now? I appreciate the fact that they replaced the TV as I realise another retailer might have made us wait, we also really appreciate the £100 refund, which we would never have asked for. But JL weren`t the easiest to deal with, you can never speak to someone knowledgable when you call, their policy of calling back means it is always at their convenience, not yours. As I was often out I`d get an answer phone message, would call back and the whole cycle would begin again., that was if they called back in the first place.

I had thought that JL would have replaced the TV straight away, or at least as soon as it became apparent that a repair was going to be difficult, especially as it was only 2.5mths old.

RE: Another Sammy LE32R74BDX LCD or not?

Bowfer - thanks for taking the time to reply :)

JL have changed their mind and are sending us a direct replacement Samsung and on Thursday no less 8) . TBH I`m OK with that as it saves me having to get the train into Nottingham etc, we`ll see how the new one goes. I`m just grateful that I`ll finally have a working telly :D

I had been reading reviews in the supermarket this morning and was thinking about a Toshiba - but it`s kind of irrelevant now.

Another Sammy LE32R74BDX LCD or not?

Finally got the promise of a credit note from John Lewis for my 2.5mth old LCD (failed panel).

Not sure whether to replace it with the same, I have (presumably) £840 to spend and it has to be in JL. I am shying away from Samsung , but having read up on the spec of the alternatives, it still seems to be a good choice and considering Samsung make a lot of the panels in competitors TVs......

Any advice would be really appreciated. I spent a lot of time researching and choosing the last TV and it was a huge financial outlay for us. We were happy with the Sammy, well for the short time that it worked :/

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Thanks Paull,

John Lewis have finally agreed to a credit note, but are claiming I have to go to a bricks and mortar JL to spend it - nearest one is bl00dy miles away >:( Also I haven`t got it yet.

TV repair firm have insisted I have the old unrepaired TV back, so that`s taking up space on my dining table, JL don`t seem to know whether Samsung will want it back ...and we still haven`t got a working TV :/

RE: parenting advice wanted please my 3yr old.............

My little girl is only 20mths, so we haven`t hit the horrors of potty training yet. But I find the BBC parenting forum has been a lifesaver, it might be worth posting your query there.

RE: PIXMANIA HALFWITS!

I`ve always been scared off by their bad reviews, even tho` they often seem to be a lot cheaper.

Just for the record, the "send the whole camera" back scenario is common. I bought a digital camera from PC World (I know, I know, but it was on offer and cheaper than anywhere else...), the camera has accidental cover, I dropped the lens but they want the whole camera back. I don`t trust them with the camera and the DHL packaging they`ve sent for it is way inadequate. So we`re at a stalemate, if I won`t let them have the camera aswell, they won`t replace the lens!

Humax 9200t update

I bought my parents a Humax PVR and although it`s the best thing since sliced bread, they say :) It means I have to give them tech support over the phone :/

There`s an over-air software update due this weekend, last time Mum updated it she selected an option which got the Humax to search for updates. It didn`t happen automatically, this time she can`t find the option on the menu.

Can anyone describe to me where it is and how it can be set to automatically update in the future.

Thanks :)

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Sorry to bang on about this...

Another month has passed and we`re still without a TV. John Lewis are taking the tack that 8wks is an acceptable length of time to wait for a repair, before they will consider replacement and they are measuring the time from pick up, which was 2wks after I reported the fault >:(

Has anyone any ideas for handling this? We spoke to trading standards, who felt that 5wks was an acceptable time to wait...but JL are having none of it.

RE: Amazon delivery times

I`ve just had some kids books delivered in 3 days on the freebie delivery option.

I have had odd instances in the past, where they have held back all my delivery for the sake of one book that they can`t get hold of, when usually they would have dispatched seperatley. Sometimes think they do this deliberatley just so you don`t rely on the free delivery instead of paying, but I never pay .....waited 3mths for one book, but it was a Yank book on green building, so maybe not the most popular book :)

RE: Police - obscene images....I know I did the right thing but....

Definitely the right thing to do.

But it`s interesting how everyone assumes the bloke is the guilty one......

RE: How Reliable are Plasma and LCD TVs ???

My Samsung is waiting for a new screen, it was 2.5mths old - bad luck, maybe?

Quote:
Best advice I think is "get it from John Lewis".

John Lewis haven`t been helpful at all, but I`ve rambled enough about that on other threads.

Thing with LCDs is that whether they are more reliable or not, when they do go wrong they have to be taken away for repair, whereas I always seem to remember TVs being fixed on the spot in the "olden days". Also there seems to be a lot of waiting around for parts, apparently JL consider it acceptable to wait upto 8wks for a repair.

Incidently my Sharp flatscreen CRT only lasted 3yrs, before becoming unrepairable, but I still have the Philips portable that I got for my 13th birthday, which makes it ...erm...20yrs+ :)

RE: Photobox.co.uk - Bl**dy useless

I`ve always used Photobox and have had great service, prints almost always arrive within 2 days and come out well.

RE: John Lewis - superb service.

Well, John Lewis have said they won`t replace the TV and that it`s acceptable to wait upto 8wks for a repair. Basically they won`t do anything.

We have spoken to trading standards who felt that 5wks was an acceptable limit, JL pointed out that Trading Standards only issued guidlines and their word isn`t law. They said we agreed to their t&c when we bought the tv. But actually I`ve never seen their t&c re. products breaking in the first couple of months.

Really gutted, the TV was a huge purchase for us and we paid more to buy from JL, assuming their customer service would live up to expectations. I know from reading other peoples experiences that they have replaced items in similar situations, especially as Samsung have no idea when they will get the part.

I just feel badly let down and stupid I guess for being daft enough to believe that they would be better than any other company.

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Bummer.

Well the screen is on a boat somewhere, no idea when it`ll arrive in the UK >:( :(

John Lewis not being very helpful either.

RE: John Lewis - superb service.

Not sure of the branch, called their customer helpline to place the order. Have taken names though.

Well, they rang back. They spoke to Samsung and apparently the part is being shipped (literally), no idea when the boat will dock. They don`t really see what else they can do to help, but if I haven`t heard from Samsung by Friday then I`ve to call again.......chocolate fireguards spring to mind :(

I`m always polite in these situations, but I am getting frustrated. Anyway I`ll see what Friday brings.....

RE: John Lewis - superb service.

Thanks for that Niteowl as it happens your reply is quite reassuring as I`;ve been on the blower to JL today.

I bought over the phone, because there was a problem with my credit card on their site.

When TV broke I phoned JL, was told I would be phoned back with 24hrs. Received no return call, so I called and they said it was a mistake, the previous guy should have said 48hrs. I replied that I`d waited all day for the call and would be away the next day. They were apologetic and said I would receive a call that evening. No return call again, I called 2 days later and was told that as the TV was under 12mths, I had to take it up with Samsung >:(

Called Samsung, TV needs a new panel, they`ve had the TV for 2wks now and have no idea when the part will be in stock.

Called JL today, went thru` the situation, told them I`d really appreciate a replacement as TV was virtually new etc etc, they weren`t really having any of it though. They have said that they will take it up with Samsung, to see if they can push things along. Someone will phone me back within 48hrs.......not really convinced. I had to push the fact that my contract was with them and not Samsung.

I guess I should have pushed JL more in the first place, but I didn`t really expect to have to. They were very, very nice when taking my order over the phone :/

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Brief update...

Well, nearly 2 wks on and we`ve finally found out the "panel" need replacing...not sure if this means the screen or a circuitry (sp) panel....OH called and he`s not big on details.
But they haven`t got the part and don`t know how long it would take to get one, hadn`t bothered to phone us and haven`t returned our receipt in the post as promised >:(

Have complained to John Lewis and they are suposed to be calling back ...

RE: John Lewis - superb service.

Hmmm, my TV bought from JL packed up after 2.5mths. I had to contact Samsung and organize the repair and it`s now gone back to the manufacturer...possibly for weeks. Personally I expected more from them :/

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Thanks for the reply Superted.

I didn`t see your message in time and the TV has already gone on it`s "hols" , so I guess we`ll have to see. The people mending it are local and seem OK, but when I spoke to Samsung on the phone they told me they`d try to get a loan tv out to us, the repairers had never heard of them doing that before...and you`ve guessed it, no loan TV has arrived :(

I`ll see how it goes, any trouble and I`ll be straight on the blower to JL. We`ve had terrible trouble with Mastercare in the past over 2 laptops, couldn`t believe the lies they spouted, it all ended messily with OH and I turning up on their doorstep to sort it out. Had hoped that buying from JL would avoid that type of scenario.

Fingers crossed

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Tbh, I agree with you. I`m also wary, because the fault is intermitent (sp), I can see them returning the TV and saying nothing`s wrong. So I have at least photographed the evidence and will send it with the TV .

We bought from JL for the free 5yr warranty and the good service after having a poor experience with some other retailers. I was really disapointed when they said we had to take it up with Samsung, which meant hanging on the phone listening to dodgy music etc, I had assumed JL would fight our corner.

I like the Sammy, wouldn`t want a different make.....but I am wondering if I can push a bit more on this, given the bloomin` tv is only 2.5mths old :(

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Yeah, but we still have the fault athough it does come and go.

Samsung are taking it away for repair (and probably me with it!), so that`ll be us sat infront of the portable again.... :(

RE: Samsung LCD TV picture fault?

Hi, thanks for the reply,

We`re using a decentish ribbon scart (Monster maybe?), tried swapping it with a spare El Cheapo, but it hasn`t made any difference to the fault.

John Lewis haven`t phoned back, so I`ll have to chase them up :(
