Page 1 of Escort gear knob-How to get it off?

OK......This might be a stupid question, but having just bought a Escort 1.8i Zetec K reg,
I`d like to change the gear knob.........simple eh!........just unscrew it,
Not according to my local parts dealer who reckons Mk 5 Escorts have a glued on knob, and the only way to get it off is to destroy the original knob!
Is this right?
There must be a lot of Escort owners out there (so I`m told), can anyone tell me how to replace the offending item? :(

Why would you want to unscrew it? You do realise that a shiny metal one won`t actually make the car go any faster? Should have saved the money you are spending on the gear knob, and no doubt the new pedals, seatbelts, lights in the windscreen washers etc. and bought a better car.

find a spanner that will fit around the gear stick under the knob and tap with a hammer, unless you have a catch to put the car into reverse under the knob, then i`d not try this one. do be carful, since you do run the risk of removing the whole stick from the gearing mechanisum if you tug too hard.

I often laff at peeps that spend five grand on Halfords s***e for their cars. I was driving my mate`s Ford Courier van the other night, a lad in a tarted up Polo hammered me at two sets of lights, at the third I actually tried and burnt him off. Just goes to show his body kit and twin exhausts actually mean f*ck all!

Aint nowt wrong with an Escort better than walking - public transport! ;)


I used a oil filter chain to shift my gear knob, worked a treat!

Thanks for all the..... er helpful advice, not sure about the furry dice, but was thinking of fitting a nice plastic stick on racing fuel cap.

The reason I need to change the gearknob is that it`s well worn and looks tatty.

At least a 1.8 Zetec is a bit of a sporty car anyway. I always end up in hysterics when some boy wonder in a Fiesta 1.1 Popular pulls up at the lights with a set of alloys worth 4 x what the car is and half of Halfords hanging off it :D

Those lights and body kits look cool on decent motors - in Fast and The Furious they start with good cars anyway (except the Jetta :p ) and make them look better. Did anyone spot a fiesta, 15 year old Nova or Polo in that movie? I think not :D
