Bubble Cars - Anybody ever own one or remember them ?
Wonder if any of the older members of this forum remember the bubble cars of the mid sixties or even own one, (or maybe still do). There were three main contenders I think i.e. Heinkel, Messerschmidt and Isetta.

My dad had a Issetta when I was a kid & my sister used to travel in her carry cot on the rear parcel shelf, talk about unsafe practise in hindsight.
My mother while she was expecting my sister, went back to the car on a hot summer & managed to break the key, me & dad got in via the sunroof, my mother had to walk the 2 or 3 miles to grans as she couldnt fit through the hatch with my sister about to drop, while dad tried to get the door open there.
I also seem to recall dad trying to drive up a hill that was just too steep & it started rolling backwards.

Oscar,
LOL,
I was actually pressganged onto HMS Victory, but I do remember the bubble cars, and the famous story of the guy who drove his new bubble car into the garage and put the front up against the back wall, forgetting that the bubble car hinged open at the front and had no reverse gears.
He was stuck inside the car for many hours / days? before someone rescued him. :/

Yeah, I heard the story of the guy locked in his car. Seemed to be a popular joke going around at the time. I actually had an Isetta with a 600cc BMW single pot engine which although I was driving on a motorbike licence, I clambered underneath to the gearbox, undid a nut a couple of turns, presto a reverse. A mate of mine had a Triumph Spitfire and he had great delight seeking out Heinkels and Messerschmidts and "beating them up". Bit sad really, thought he was a WW2 fighter pilot. Another aquaintance had a Messerschmidt which I had a go in, very nippy it was. Eventually the floor rusted away and so resembled a Fred Flintstone car. Wish I`d kept mine, might have been worth a bit now. What a great thing hindsight is .

NO REVERSE GEAR!, thinking back twenty years now....
Yep, me and two of my mates helped a lad in a two seater (one behind the other) Messerschmidt, as he drove down a dead end lane, he got out red faced and we carried the `car` out coffin style, back to the main road, What a larff. :)
