After 9/11 I cant imagine what went through peoples minds after the blackout, what a scary world we live in.........so okay it turns out that lightning was the cause, but just to have a blackout on that scale must be scary but add to that the possability of another terrorist attack...poeple must have been scared....hope to god people feel more at ease now....but there again after the twin towers do any of us really feel safe?

Dont know what all the fuss is about. There is no guarentee in the world that your electricity will not be cut off.

A lot of the world does not have mains electricity at all,

Most 2nd & 3rd world countries have small independant networks that tend to have brown outs all the time.(not as severe as a black out as its a daily occurance and the populus know its going to happen, especially at tea time and if there is a popular football match being televised) Though many countries are now working towards a large grid system plus sharing over borders.

We in 1st world countries have a large grid system that relies on large power stations and spare capacity (spinning reserve, hydro, gas turbines) to keep the mains running smoothly. Britain, the majority of Europe and USA are in this last catogory.

The main point about a network system, although there is the need & a promise to keep operating, there are protection devices in place to take a power station off line before any damage is done to the machinary, which has a greater priority over keeping mains supplied, so that it can eventually come back on line, safely.

Note also there could be a conspiricy plan afoot, if you want to think that way.

We in Britain and the USA have reached a turning point with regard to power stations, the majority of Joe public do not want Neuk power stations,as they are rather dangerous and hard to clean up and people have the `not in our patch` mentality, but they do contribute to a large proportion of the base supply on the grid.

It would take a lot of small power station, coal ,oil, wind farms to equal a neuk power station.
In Britain alternate energy power from wind farms and wave power is starting to contribute more but its is only about 10% at present.

So if Joe public has now been given the `scare` of blackouts and brown outs.
Where do the politicians turn to as a quick solution for more spare capacity, yes, you guessed it, the old `lets have more neuk power stations` answer. So watch out for this solution, its definately in the cards but its not the enviromentally friendly or safe answer .

Remember Chenovil in Russia and Three mile Island in the USA.
