Page 1 of Where to go in New York?
General Forum
Off to the big apple next week, for 7 days. Anyone got any suggestions of must go places?
Obviously the Empire State Building, Twin Towers memorial thingy and Statue of Liberty are already on the list.

RE: Where to go in New York?
If you`re into music then check out the Chelsea Hotel (its where sid killed nancy, bob dylan stayed a while in the 60s as did leonard cohen and janis joplin, dylan thomas lived and died there too...) also check out chelsea guitars next door and say hello to Dan!
The library is very impressive...it might have the declaration of independance on display which is cool.
Grand Central station is amazing (remember the ballroom dance from the fisher king?)
Central park..the chrysler building..china town(look for cheap dvds)..little italy(good food)
In fact its all really good...i`ve been a few times and it never fails to blow me away, go to all the tourist-y places as they are all pretty cool...theres also some great bars with live music(try b.b.kings or the supper club if you feel flash)
If you`re looking for dvds then shop around as prices can vary quite a bit and they`re not always cheaper than you might be used to online.
hope this is of some help?

Where to eat....
If you like steak, then you MUST go to Peter Lugers. It`s in Brooklyn ($25 each way if you take a cab) but well worth the trip. can be hard to get a night time reservation but lunch should be fine.
I go to NYC quite a bit and will email more suggestions tomorrow.

if your going to go to the statue of liberty then the best time to get there is at the crack of dawn as they close access to the crown mid morning. so get up around 6am and make an early start....
I`m off to new york in a couple of months for a long weekend. I was hoping to go and see some stand-up comedy. can anyone reccommend a good venue?
Try to get up the Empire State building first thing in the morning too - or you could queue for ages!
We went at Christmas and the outdoor ice rink outside Rockafella Plaza was great - but I dunno whats there during the summer.
Take a horse drawn carriage ride round Central Park too - it`s amazing and you`ll feel like you`re in a movie.
Times Square is a MUST see, especially at night - but the lights are on all day.
We also went on a 3 hours cruise all the way round Manhatten Island. They leave from the piers near the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space museum (an aircraft carrier!) on 12th Ave at 48th St. You get a commentary from a local all the way round and it`s very interesting to find out the history of the place. Plus you get to see Statue of Liberty and the business district (ie ground zero) from the water.
If you haven`t been before you`ll be amazed that most of the famous land marks (Empire State, Grand Central, New York Public Library, St Patricks Cathedral, Maceys, Bloomingdales, Times Square etc) are within walking distance of each other. It`s great to walk round and take in the atmosphere of the place - I felt like I was on a giant movie set, you`ll recognize locations from loads of TV shows and films. There`s also a good tourist bus system where you can buy a ticket and get on and off as and when you like if you don`t want to walk - it stops at all the major attractions.
Statue of Liberty has been closed since 9/11. You can still get on Liberty Island (and Ellis Island) but not into the Statue. In my opinion it isn`t worth going to the island if you can`t go up the statue. The queues are phenomenal!! You can get a great view of the statue from the Staten Island Ferry (and it`s free!).
If you like shopping go to Century 21 (facing the WTC site). It`s like a huge TK Maxx - but with Gucci, Prada etc. Fifth Ave and Madison Ave is also great for shopping, but can be pricey.
If you want to catch a movie, skip the multiplexes (excellent as they are) and head to the Ziegfeld (west 54 between 6th and 7th ave). It`s legendary in NYC - one HUGE screen, digital projection - it has it all. Loew`s Astor Plaza near 45th and 7th (or thereabouts) is another great option. If you do want a multiplex then Loew`s e-walk is a good chioce, as is the AMC (25 screens) across the street - both are near Port Authority.
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and have lunch in Grimaldi`s (arguably the best pizza in NYC). The promenade (in Brooklyn is a great place to walk around too).
The Intrepid Air, Sea and Space museum is pretty cool. You have `free run` of the USS Intrepid (air craft carrier), USS Edison (battle ship) and USS Growler (Sub). Last time I visited, they had a lockheed blackbird (you could stand on it!).
A great website for info is fodors.com (go to travel talk (US).
Any questions - just ask.
