Problem with Saving Private Ryan & Awia 370

stanly (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 16th January 2001, 17:26

Having just purchased player and film there seems to be a problem with picture on the beach scene, where there is fire in background and other scenes, lines come from the flames and also sometimes half the screen is lighter. I am using RGB output into sony TV. Tried different disc still same. Gladiator works fine.
Anyone got any ideas
Cheers

What release is the film? I have DTS R1 + Aiwa370 + Sony KV-29C5D (RGB), I havn`t noted anything in particular, but I`ll play it again and check for you.

Uh Oh....

This is a similar problem to what I had with my Aiwa.
I had the player for about two months then started to get the kind of problem you are describing (but probably worse...) Light areas on the screen like the brightness had been turned up. Do a search on this forum for more info.

Anyway, the online retailler wouldn`t do a refund or replacement (I`d had the machine too long) and insisted on a repair. I phoned Aiwa UK but they are useless and didn`t want to know. It has been away for a week now and no idea when it will come back. I have been told that this is not an uncommon problem on LG (i.e. also Aiwa machines) and that the return rate on LG DVD`s is quite high (upgrade heaven say they have had a lot of LG problems).

Anyway yours sounds quite new so take it back and get it swapped or a refund. Once you have had it more than 28 days you`re stuck with it like me. I`m not happy!

Have same problem with my Eclipse 595, played ok first few times then after the beach landing where they`ve climbed up to the trenches noticed bright patches around the flames. After that sequence it stops and doesn`t recurr, weird.
Also, Eclipse 595 has s*** NTSC to PAL conversion, all my R1`s are jerky (taking it back on thursday).

Ok,
I played my copy and checked out the scene descibed and yes I get the effect too. I also noticed it towards the end in the scene where "Uppham" has shot the German POW. the effect is present in slo-mo, pause, frame advance. but when the shot changes, the disturbance stops. No other film I have watched shows the same effect.

I am loath to single out the Aiwa as the same effect hasn`t been seen on any of my other films, I`ll try to get some mates to play "SPR" on their machines to see if I can, come to a firmer conclusion.

Any constructive observations from Sony, Pioneer etc owners?

This effect is intentional, and is present on all copies !!! Spielberg "ground" the lenses of the cameras to give the grainy effect of 1940`s war correspondance footage. The side effect was that anti glare protection was also removed. If you read the many reviews (try imdb) of this film, you will see that this is the case with all copies....

Ok. Stanly

I have done some digging on the net, and came up with this quote from the site below.

"There is a moment about 25 minutes into the film, where a special lens was employed to create a flaring effect of background flames. This results in bright columns of reflected glare rising up from each small fire. I spoke with Dreamworks about this moment in the film and was assured that it was in fact, an intentional effect that was also present in the theatrical release. I can`t recall it specifically, but I have no reason to doubt their word. I only mention it here so that you are aware that it is NOT a defect in the transfer, which earns our highest honors for image quality."

I now believe there is little wrong with my Aiwa, and what I am seeing is described above. Perhaps my Aiwa+Sony+ my eyes accentuate the effect, (I even recall something similar in the theatre).

Cheers mate
Good to know it is the disc and not player, thanks.
My mate played it on his Proline 1000 and it was the same.
