Problems with Scan sc2000

Rob Brady (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 19th July 2000, 22:19

Just taken delivery of my Scan
Generally very happy, but have found a few niggly problems.
It plays an MP3 disc I have quite happily while the machine is cool. If I try and play the disc after the machine has been on a while and has heated up (after watching a movie for instance) the disc will not play and won`t recognise. Anyone else suffered this. The unit does get quite hot. Is this unusual?
Secondly, I`ve noticed quite a few artifacts on a couple of movies i`ve watched, almost like shimmering ares in the background. I used to play DVD`s on a PC wired through my Sony STRDB925 and Thomson 32 inch screen, and never seemed to notice these.
Any clues?

Thanks
Rob

Re the shimmering - are you connected RGB, SVideo or composite? You may need to check the set up menu to actually tell the unit to output RGB, make sure you are using a 21 pin wired scart, and are plugged into an RGB scart on the tv

I`m using the S-Video out on the DVD Player into the S-Video in on the TV. The picture through the scart is very poor. Changing the player output between Composite and RGB makes no difference. I have checked that the Scart socket on the TV supports RGB, and also used several Scart leads in case that was the problem. I notice from newsgroup threads that there are RGB problems with the new shipment from Scan. I guess i`ll try the player on a friends Sony TV which I can force into RGB. Othewise its back to Scan.
Oh, I tried another MP3 disk and its fine. Must be iffy media!
Still, I was expecting a better quality picture than my old DXR2 decoder card.

I`ve experienced the picture problems. Basically the player appears to default to composite through the SCART even if in setup you specify RGB. I got round this by forcing my TV to take the RGB input. This works, but the picture quality isn`t that good. The picture appears pale, like the colour is washed out, there`s even a green tinge (no I wasn`t watching The Matrix). Only S-Video gives a reasonable picture - ok if your TV accepts it. (As for the DTS output - see other thread!)

I`ve checked various DVD newsgroups. It seems several of the new batch of SC 2000`s have screwed SCART connectors that will not switch to RGB. I tried the player on a friends Sony Wega TV and that would not switch to RGB either. I`m calling Scan tomorrow to send my player back, although I`ve read i may have to wait awhile before a new delivery is forthcoming. The S-Video is ok, bit my TV accepts RGB so why not use it?. Apart from that fact, I think its a good buy.

Hey Rob,

Im thinking of buying the machine but keep putting it on hold as new problems seem to continually arise with it!!! Could you let me know what Scan say to u today (Monday) with regards to getting a replacement player, ie will u have to wait for next batch and will it cost u money to return it inorder to get the exchange (i mean delivery charges etc).

Thanks

Magik

I spoke to Scan this afternoon. The tech support guy admitted that the second batch of players had a lot of video connector problems. So I`m sending mine back for a full refund, although I have to pay the postage for that (CityLink approx £7). You need to ring Scan`s tech support and get a return (RMA) number. The guy said the next batch will be in about mid-August. I don`t know whether to wait or look elsewhere. Do I really need MP3 capability? LG are bringing out a couple of new players, the 3200 & the 3350 (3350 will have MP3), I might look at those.

Oh well looks like Im putting my purchase on hold then!! How can Scan continue to advertise and sell this product (especially on their today only page) knowing full well that the majority if not all of the players are defective in that the video connectors are faulty. They should in no way be offering what is known to be a faulty product. Other consumers who arent aware of the problems will buy this and then most probably have to return it (at their own expense). This matter should be looked into. What do others think?

I might consider the Mico A980, anyone got one of these, or know where i can read a few online reviews??? From what ive heard about it everything is good.

Errr hang on your paying Scan to pick up what is a defective player???

Surely Scan should be recalling the faulty batch and re-issuing them when the new players arrive.

I have emailed Nilesh at Scan twice so far as suggested on the newsgroups as I have no intention of being sold short. Sale of goods blah blah etc.

I wonder whether DVD reviewer will get involved with this as they seem to have some influence with Scan?
