First we had Elvis in the 50s.
Then we had the Beatles in the 60s.

I was wondering with so many bands and singers during the 70s, 80s and 90s, in your opnioin who were The Beatles succesor in the 70s and then which band in the 80s was the succesor of the band you chose in the 70`s and so forth.

I was thinking as Elvis and The Beatles were popular music, with the occasional experimental tracks thrown in, both of them had a massive string of hits, I thought the choice of band or artist should be in the popular catagory.

So get your thinking caps on and pull out all your cds, vinals, tapes, and 8 tracks out and decide

Errrr.. David Bowie for the 70`s, U2 in the 90`s....and I`m pretty stumped on the 80`s...how about a combination of Duran Duran, New Order and The Smiths?!

Band of the 70`s - Queen, not into their music personally, but will admit they had some good hits.


The Band of the 80`s, even though they never had very much success over here would definetely be Aerosmith, although they reinvented themselves and produced their best album in 1990/91.

Anyone who doesn`t own their greatest hits, buy it because it`s excellent if you like your blues/jazz inspired rock `n roll.


Band of the 90`s - gotta be Oasis from a personal point of view, they reinvented British Rock `n Roll and no matter what people think of them, their first two albums go down in Rock `n Roll History. Agree with U2 also, but I think their a lot like The Rolling Stones, i.e Massive amounts of album sales, but only a handful of decent tunes. They certainly didn`t do as much for music as Oasis did in the 90`s and are only successful because the American public liked a few songs, and took them to their hearts.

That`s just my opinions, so no flaming please.

Arguably Oasis, Stone Roses and Nirvana I would say are nearly all as equally important for the 90`s..... though Oasis probably edge it.

If it hadn`t have been for Stone Roses, Oasis would have not existed - so who is the more important? Hmmm.... hard to say.

Stone Roses paved the way for Oasis - who then opened the door to the whole Britpop scene, letting in many great (and dire) bands. Oasis were incredibly influential, and I would say were more important than U2 in the 90`s.

Nirvana practically created a new genre of music, that is still desperately copied today by many bands.

Queen for the 70`s.

I would probably put U2 in the 80`s rather than the 90`s. They`re bigger hits were in the late 80`s.

The 90`s is tougher. The Guiness book of Hit Singles says Madonna as top act of the 90`s but I don`t think you can compare her with Elvis, Beatles etc.
