Whats your stance on Europe/The EU?

cfgte3 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 28th May 2003, 09:56

Myself, I`m pro Europe but against Britain being in the EU. IMO we were sold something different in 1975 when we joined the common market. Its become more and more of a political monster we`ve been getting dragged into and less of what it should be about, free trade and commerce within Europe. The Franco-German axis in Europe seems to want to build a superstate to compete with America, a bad thing in my opinion. Theres no reason why we can`t trade freely with the whole of Europe without being controlled by them i.e. Norway and Switzerland.

What do you reckon? Any views?

Rich

I`d advise you Brits to come and join the EU party - at the very least you might get more votes in the next Eurovision ;-)

My two cents is to stay out of the EU altogether...we have been surviving fine without it, and as a poster said, it is a "political beast".

I think the more entwined into the EU the UK is, the better. Will at the very least stop Tony "Weapons of Mass Destruction" Blair from supporting the Americans everytime they want to invade another middle-eastern state to protect Isreal`s interests.

I`m also for a European army, but one with teeth that is willing to go into places like Congo and protect the innocent civilians from civil war, rather than promise to go in and then casually trot along after all the genocide has been over and done with (cough Rowanda).

As for staying out of the EU altogether, and that we`ve survived fine without it, er we are already in the EU, and we have been for some time. :p

why the hell should we all be dictated to by a bunch of people who don`t even like us? There are many positive things that could come out of being more integrated into the EU, but the bad things outweigh them massively.

As for the Euro, I`d just love Tony to put it to the public vote. Only then would he finally see how much we want him to shove that funny money up his arse

I meant before we joined...remember such small things as The British Empire?! :)

Thats right, rather than try and engage in dialog with our neighbours, lets just go and invade an african country, put half the population in slavery and rape the country of its mineral wealth.

Who knows, we may just get a constitution outlining what the government can and can`t do, instead of just being able to do what they want (or whatever the media whip the masses into wanting).

There`s plenty wrong with europe (CAP, unelected officials, the petty squabling, the French) and plenty that is right (European Parliment, you know the one that people don`t bother voting for, and the Conservatives don`t like because they don`t want unelected people telling us what to do and the Euro).

I`m sorry, what`s your point? ;)

There is too much wrong with the EU at present, mainly the French and Germans (interesting to see they`re such good mates only 60 years after the horrendous things the latter did to the former...and who saved the French then may I add?), to justify us getting tangled up in it all.

Pop quiz:

1) During the Falklands War, which country provided the UK military intelligence with full schematics and details of various missile based weaponry they had sold to Argentina a few years previously to aid the British forces

2) In the same war, which country consistantly withheld military intelligence from the UK government, despite passing on much of the same intelligence to its own airlines, to protect their business interests

Possibly unfair questions, as you weren`t born at the time, but probably far more far than asking a few similar questions which date back to the second world war. :)

I still stand by my previous remark - if you want to rebuild the British Empire then start by getting with the EU program (sadly, this includes being nice to your fellow Eurovision countries). I reckon getting at least one vote in next year`s Eurovision Song Contest would be a big start... remember, Rome wasn`t built in a day plus it might stop you lot boring the rest of Europe by harping on about the 1966 World Cup every time an Englishman even looks at a football. ;-)
