Just realised I`ve had a letter printed...

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Monday, 28th April 2003, 23:49

... In this months "Watchdog" section of PCZone magazine. I don`t usually buy this magazine but took them up on the 3 issues for 1p deal, and made a complaint about Mesh Computers. It`s too big a story to go into now, suffice to say you can read it in your local newsagents now! Though to be honest I felt Mesh basically tried to fob them off with a load of spin, but nevermind, eh? Anyway, if anybody reads this, I`d appreciate peeps views on this matter if they do read my letter - cos I`m not very happy about it and would appreciate some opinions!

Wow, I feel kind of proud to see my name in print. I am sad, I admit.

If you`re a magazine stockpiler, like me, try Gamesmaster Mag issue #85 (september 99 - Dino Crisis on the cover) I got the star letter that month. Some rant about piracy which was also reference in the response to another letter.

Also Official Playstation magazine, August 1999, (silent hill on the cover) page 16, `It should be a game` section. That`s my crappy artwork down the bottom there, with the synopsis of a rather good game concept which suprisingly, hasn`t been ripped off yet..

Actually, I`ve also had a review printed in PC Gamer, which was quite controversial. I`ve had a couple printed in Edge magazine and also in CVG, although quite some few years ago.

I did use to keep all my magazines but chucked them out about a year ago, what was your game concept about anyway? Not that I`ll steal it and claim it as my own of course.

It was called `Spliced` and was basically, `Theme-Genetic manipulation`. Sounded good on paper...

`you`re a freshly-graduated medical student with plenty of zeal and £10.000 weighing down your pockets. This is where things start to go a little off the wall. Rather than spend your money on traditional staples like curry, pot noodles and lager, you decide to try your hand at genetic mainpulation. he aim of the game is to create as interesting a mutant as possible, gaining media attention along the way. You use your stash of cash to purchase equipment and space to help you carry out your experiments. For instance, an electron microscope and a scalpel will set you back a virtual £5000 whereas a swiss army knife and a magnifying glass will only cost a tenner. By the same token, ytou can rent space in a new research lab, or a bench in a abbatoir, it`s up to you.
Your main constraints are money and the threat of sabotage from animal rights activists. make too many mistakes and the tabloids will start hounding for your blood, and naturally, you`re fined for not disposing of the corpses properly`

There was more, but it was edited for space. I won a copy of Civilisation 3 for the Playstation, which I got very bored with very quickly, so I sold it to my brother for a tenner

That sounds brilliant, where can I pre-order a copy from? I particularly liked the bit about the tabloids, it could almost be the new Championship Manager. I like the name of it too, though you could have called it maybe "Splice World" or "Mutant Manipulator" too.

I see you put loads of thought into, and rightfully rewarded. That idea is sitting on the shelf in some games companies office at the minute, I put money on it. lol! Still you got a tenner for it at least.

I always feel quite proud of seeing one of my letters in print, I also managed to get my name in one of the picture captions too! Woohoo!
If you`ve seen my letter, well I have to say that I was very confused by the response I got from the accused company, and have since written another letter to defend my case. They seemed to completely miss the point...

It`s often worth writing the odd letter to magazines anyway, just in case you get yourself a prize, like you`ve done Rob_B - congratulations! :-P

Sadly I had a letter printed in one of the earliest editions of Gamesmaster Magazine circa 1993. I say sadly because for some reason I felt it important to moan about the lack of reviews for the Atari Lynx handheld console when I should have been concentrating on maybe meeting girls and getting some fresh air. To say I was in a minority is probably a correct assumption. I also signed the letter with `Lynxian` as my middle name. Please forgive me.

I dunno, that`s pretty unforgivable...

..oh, ok...

Would be amusing if "Lynxian" was your middle name though. At least I`m not in the minority for having letters printed in computer games magazines. I`ve never written to Digitiser or the crap on the BBC. Though Mr. Biffo on Digitiser was a comedy genius. They had some of the funniest most obscure comedy on there, but its gone a bit crap now. Here is a bit from their Titanic 2 film script....

Titanic 2, Deck, Night

Rose: Oh, no we just hit an iceberg. It`s happening again. We are going to die.
Jack: Don`t worry, this is just an elaborate virtual reality simulation.
Rose: Really?
Jack: No, we`re going to die.
