Advice from any HI-FI boffins out there please.

The original 42pcenter MD (Elite) posted this on Friday, 11th April 2003, 15:04

I know there is a couple of you out there.

I am toying with the idea of geting a Michell Gyrodec SE with the Rega RB 300 arm. I know this deck is up there with the best at it`s price and I must admit that the looks are swaying me. (I know I am a bad boy)

Does anyone have any experiance of this deck?

I am using Musical Fidelity A3 pre/pwr, Monitor Audio silver 8i, VDH first metal, Chord Anthem interconects and Audioquest Forrest speaker cable.

Any thoughts?

All the best,

Andy,
For us old codgers the J.A. Mitchell gyrodeck is one of the true classic designs of British hifi, a visual feast thats almost erotic in it`s combination of looks, fuctionality and sound quality.
I bought an early one secondhand fitted with an SME arm, complete in the original glass box, a few years ago which in a moment of madness I then resold to my brother in law.

For quite a few years I`ve very happily run the RB300 on the original Rega 3 which I actually chose instead of the LP12/RB300 as I found the Rega combination faster with more depth and transparency.

No one knows better than yourself that the final element, the cartridge is equally important, though I`m sure you will find a quality HiFi dealer in Leicester who will allow you to compare the cartridges you select ;-))
Of course it`s always subjective, please let us know what you finally audition.
Cheers

Phil K.

Well, I run an LP12 with Naim Aro arm, and find it very satisfying in a musical sense. Let`s not get into definitions of musicality, though!
I understand the Gyrodecks may be a bit more "hifi" - more of the detail, depth, transparency, etc than the LP12, but I just find the LP12 to be a good groover. I enjoy listening to the music it produces, and I don`t end up listening to the hifi.

I knew you were out there.

Cheers for the advice. I use a Linn Basik at the moment and it was my first piece of proper Hi-Fi and I have been tempted by the LP12 but I am afraid looks are comming into it and the Linn just don`t do it for me.

Cart wise I will proberbly go for a Rocksan of some sort but this is where my knowlage is sadly lacking.

All the best and thank god for dealer own use discount.

Andy B (42%er)......aren`t you a branch manager of a "sevenoaks" shop in Leicester? if not where did I get the idea from? and if you are, shouldn`t you be the final say in "hi-fi expertise" ?

Cheers, Marty.

Richard, since I saw your post I`ve been desperately trying to remember the brand of the uni pivot pickup arm I had on my first decent turntable ( a Thorens TD160 ), it looked a little like the Naim arm but with a smaller cartridge platform.
It was a nightmare to setup but once calibrated out performed many other arms available at the time ( mid 70`s )
Does it trigger anyones memory ?
P.

P.S. I remember after a tip in one of the hifi mags at the time buying and sticking bitumen panels to the underside of the platter on the thorens to improve stability and sound stage
It actually worked ;-))
