General questions about DVD`s, players and the future >>>..>>...>>>

Just a few general questions........

DVD`s.....

Will we be seeing more and more films out that are flippers or two disks ?
What is the maximum you can put on a DVD ?
Will DTS replace Dolby ?

PLAYERS...

Why don`t manufactures make twin disc trays ? like CD players ? (although I have seen one brand, can`t remember which one but was well pricey)
What will be the next big thing to come out on players ?
Will DTS replace Dolby ?
Why can`t you buy a DVD player with a built in Amp ? (or can U ?)

and why do widescreen telly`s cost an arm and leg ?

So who ever replys please stick the questions, I don`t want to know about toasters or how good an Awia... Hita...Encore.....Wharfy....is, I know I have read enough of these threads to know !

Just a few general answers :-

>DVDs.....
>
>Will we be seeing more and more films out that are
>flippers or two disks ?

I should hope that we won`t see any more flippers! We might still see more DVD-18s which contain the film on one side and the extras on the other side (a chunk of the recent Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition batch were manufactured this way, with the rest being pressed as two discs). I think we`ll definitely be seeing more 2 disk sets.

>What is the maximum you can put on a DVD ?

How long is a piece of string? Seriously, it varies wildly depending on the quality and format of the original source material.

>Will DTS replace Dolby ?

No, but we will probably see more discs with DTS soundtracks coming onto the region two market.

>PLAYERS...
>
>Why don`t manufactures make twin disc trays ? like CD players ?
>(although I have seen one brand, can`t remember which one
>but was well pricey)

There are quite a few players that fit into this category, including players from Toshiba and JVC. Can`t remember how much they cost, but it was in the 300-400 pound bracket I`m sure (does that count as "well pricey" though?) There`s also the Sony 200-disc player and equivalents from rival manufacturers.

>What will be the next big thing to come out on players ?

Haven`t got a clue on that one.

>Will DTS replace Dolby ?

No.

>Why can`t you buy a DVD player with a built in Amp ? (or can U ?)

You can buy quite a few - Sony DAV-S300 (or something like that), a Pioneer equivalent and several more besides.

>and why do widescreen telly`s cost an arm and leg ?

1. Define "an arm and a leg"
2. Perhaps the question should be "Why do Widescreen TVs from the big manufacturers cost an arm and a leg?"

You can get good budget models for less than 300 pounds (e.g. Wharfedale CTV-890 from Tesco), but if you look towards the bigger names (Sony, Panasonic etc.) you start to double, treble or multiply that figure even further. Maybe it`s true that you get what you pay for, but it`s also true that there are a lot of satisfied owners of budget widescreen TVs out there.

Well vern I hope you are going to enjoy this, because it`s the second time that I post this reply to your question (first answer was nicely deleted by some password error #é!µ^ù!!) .

So here it goes (again :-/ )

Just a few general questions........
They`re not a few and trust me I know.

First of the DVD`s.....

Q: Will we be seeing more and more films out that are flippers or two disks ?
A: Probably 2 discs with one containing the movie and the other the extra`s. As far as I can see flippers are something from the past.

Q: What is the maximum you can put on a DVD ?
A: Well I know it`s quite an amount. I thought it was about 5 Gigabytes on one side, but then again does it really matter? As long as the movie fits with some nice sound attached, I will be satisfied.

Q: Will DTS replace Dolby ?
A: No I don`t think so, Dolby Labs have enough power and facilities to keep on going. And they are enhancing Dolby Digital, so that it can compete with DTS and any other future sound standards. They`ll probably end up next to each other.

And now for the PLAYERS...

Q: Why don`t manufactures make twin disc trays ? like CD players ? (although I have seen one brand, can`t remember which one but was well pricey)
A: As u mentioned, they do already exist. Toshiba has its SD200E wich has an twin disc tray (probably the on u saw), while other brands like JVC, Pioneer and Sony have multiple disc changers in their catalogs.

Q: What will be the next big thing to come out on players ?
A: My guess is DVD recorders and compatibility with the players. At the moment these things are still very exotic, but after a while when the technology is going to become cheaper and more advanced, it will replace VCR`s as we know it.

Q: Will DTS replace Dolby ?
A: I thought we`d handled this one already? (oh no, that`s a question not an answer).

Q: Why can`t you buy a DVD player with a built in Amp ? (or can U ?)
A: Never heared of the all-in-one systems like the award winning JVC TH-A10R, the Pioneer NS-DV55 or the Sony DAV-S300?

Q: and why do widescreen telly`s cost an arm and leg ?
A: They don`t, if some dodgy reseller is asking after any of your body parts, then just turn around and run out of there!! Have a look at the basic models of Samsung or Thomson, their prices seem pretty decent.

Q: So who ever replys please stick the questions, I don`t want to know about toasters or how good an Awia... Hita...Encore.....Wharfy....is, I know I have read enough of these threads to know !
A: As this isn`t a question I don`t think I have to respond to it.

And by the way ....
my Aiwa Rocks like hell where AC/DC are picking a fight with Metallica to see who can get to be first with putting wip cream on those oranges that Britney used to call **___*__***___*___.

Well u can take a joke right??

DAMNED damned DAMNNNnnnnn

I`m a quiet kind of person as people on this forum can vouch for me, this is super frustrating.

First of, I put a glorious answer (if I say so myself) in this thread, but then the fridging thing asks for my password.
So calm as I am I give it to her, but meanwhile she deleted my whole answer impossium!!

So I could start all over again then to find out that the little twit does it to me again, but luckily I backed it up for save keeping.

As when I finally can get the post posted to see that there have been two guys in front of me .......

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh

And then u guys wonder why there`s such violent language here on this forum?

I`m none the wiser...

At least I can say that although my opinions are shared, the response that I gave was a tad more detailed and visual more attractive.

No offense of course, but for once:

:P

And vern count yourself lucky!!

Well thanks for the answers to my questions in response to guys asking define arm and a leg, I`d like a 32" Widescreen (as I already have a 28" normal telly that is) but the cheapest I`ve seen is around 450 notes ! the wife would kill me............as for the twin disk DVD players and players including amps they too cost and arm and leg, guessing that they would be 400 + notes for either ?!?!?!?

OK so the point I`m making is that I want a rolls royce system but pay for the cost of a mini ! greedy I know but I guess I`ll just have to wait until the prices come down...........

Yes I do have a sense of humour I just didn`t want this thread to be hijacked and have to go through page and page of Dukey boy, lievn, blazin etc saying funboy and repent etc etc don`t get me wrong I enjoy reading it sometimes but then other times it gets a bit long winded !

Well I`m off now to see what the wifes cooked, see if the dog will eat it, watch Leon AGAIN...............boy I love DVD movies best thing since sliced bread !
