General Forum
I have a Kodak 3700 3.1 million Pixel Digital Camera which takes good pictures but is a bit slow and big and has no self timer. I got it for £100 so can`t complain.
I keep getting asked what is a good digital camera to buy but there are so many to chose from so I am asking you all what you think??
From what I know you need at least 2 Million Pixel if you are going to print pictures at the standard 6x4 Inch. If you want a picture A4 ish size you need a 3 Million plus one like mine.
I also think self timer is essential. Optical zoom would be nice. No cheating with interpolated.
With these considerations what do people recommend and where`s the best price from??
Maximum of £300 please.
I`ve just bought a Canon Ixus V3 camera. Its my first digital camera and am a complete novice when it comes to using one, but i thinks it very good for the price. Nice and compact, easy to use, basically point and shoot. Bundle of extras so that you can get more from your pictures.
Most places are charging £349 - £389, but i got mine, with free shipping from Amazon for £314.
See the link below for a review. Its a USA site, but the spec is the same.
In the states its called a Canon S230 camera.

Heh, I am thinking about a new camera at the moment, and I was going to point you at the one I am looking at, until I got to the last line! I am looking at the Nikon D100 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond100/) but that will run about £1500 without a lens!
However dpreview ((http://www.dpreview.com)is a good place to check reviews of cameras as is Steves Digicams (http://www.steves-digicams.com/).
My old camera is a casio, 2.1 MegaPixel and did really nicely, tho the concern with the casio cameras is that you have to use the LCD on the back to take the photo (no viewfinder) and that means they use batteries more than most, but if you get a decent set of 1800mAh NiMH batteries, I have not found that a problem, so certainly condider the casios!
For £300 you should certainly find optical zoom, and yes, it is worth holding out for. You should also think about what the camera stores the pics on, smart media / compact flash / memory stick / secure digital etc so check out how much the camera comes with (and how many pics will fit on that) and check the price of the memory http://www.7dayshop.com are usually good for prices on digital film, so check them out.
Thanks for the info.
For most people I know even £300 for a camera is a LOT of money. Yes memory price is a consideration as I bought a 64MB MMC card from the US as it was about £80 here and £35 in the US at the time. The prices have got cheaper since but for most people like me just one extra card is enough. I have 64 + 32 + 8MB internal = 104MB which is enough for over 100 photos in best quality.
Batteries! Yes they are also an issue but are quite cheap now from firms like 7dayshop. I went to Paris last year and my Kodak took 70 photos with the screen on before they ran out. My mate has a Nikon which eats batteries though!
As I said for most people, as long as they can print a 6x4 and it looks good the they would be happy. Whats the Casio like for prints? Can you print above 6x4 and it look ok?
Can I recommend the Fuji Finepix 601? I also got one of the Kodak's at £100 which was good for the price but a little disappointing really (big, slow, ugly, plastic etc…you know the rest) I was lucky enough to win a Fuji 601 a few months later and it's in a completely different class. For the full specs check out
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/fuji_f601z.html but off the top of my head it's 3x optical and up to 4x digital zoom, has a self timer, short video clips inc audio and comes with 16MB Smartmedia. Build quality is excellent and it looks fantastic. I didn't think it would come in at your £300 budget, but there are a couple of places selling it for £5 either side of this including www.nomatica.com This doesn't include the docking cradle, but this is only really required for audio/video out - charging and downloading can be done directly (not sure if the cradle is required to use it as a webcam) Been very happy with it, and I don't think I've ever seen it get a bad write up.
RE: Digital Camera Owners!!
Check out kenrockwell.com. This guy knows his photographic onions and explains just about all you need to know about digital (and conventional) photography. He`s into top end stuff, way above your budget, but the additional info is well worth a read. He recommends stuff based on his or his friends useage, not what he reads on the net.
Has anyone bought one of those Trust 4 megapixel ones from Evesham or Staples? Seem quite a bargain for £120, with a flash and lcd screen.
the fuji 6800 is on offer at internet cameras direct for abou £320 at the moment. I will probably order one soon as i just lost my other one as part of the divorce settlement DOH
it was loads more when I last bought it and I`ve been happy as a pig in smelly mud with it
