R.I.P thedvdforums.com Bargain section

Sconie (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 8th January 2003, 22:20

It seems the other great bargain site has shut down to all but the elite (200 plus posts), I enjoy browsing the boards and although I don`t post many bargains, I like to think even infrequent posters can contribute.
Here`s hoping this site stays open to all.

Thanks
Sconie.

Makes perfect sense to me : the amount of lurkers on that Forum was scandalous, to say the least : not even a thank you from most of them.

They`d only post when they had a problem, and then would wonder why everyone picked on them because they`d only posted 12 times on the whole forum since April 2001 (there`s more than one Forum there, after all...)

Give and take in the bargain world - find something, post it : don`t be selfish : something a lot of these type of people failed to get the gist of.

Moved to General Forum, as this is more of a discussion post, and not a bargain per se ;-)

Just as an addition, looks like it may be a long-term closure, judging by Colin Polanski`s note from 22.25 hrs tonight :

"Until then, the bargain forum is closed (at least while the traffic is at the current levels - if it drops off then we may reopen them). There`s no point in padding up to 200 posts for now as I don`t know if the bargain forum is going to reopen for quite some time anyway now."

I think they`re having serious traffic over there, and it`s starting to get a bit expensive.

Although I`m sure that what you say is from the heart, I fail to see why genuine new, or to use their slightly condescending term "Junior " members, are excluded from this forum.
By definition a forum is a place where discussions are held, not an elitist club based purely how many times you post.
If ( as I have done ) someone posts correctly in the spirit of the forum on the first post, they are as entitled to contribute as someone with 4000 odd posts,

It`s called democracy.

If they do not want my contribution they should have refused my membership application.
I will not be returning to this site ( although perhaps thats what the object of this exercise is )
As Groucho Marx said "I don`t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members "

The problem lies in the amount of traffic (and lots of expense to the DVD Forums) they`re getting from freeloaders who basically park themselves in the Bargain Forum all day, hitting refresh every five minutes and then snaffling all the bargains, rather than contributing to their other excellent forums (a very extensive range from TV to Sport to Computers to General Chit Chat).

Which is surely your point - taking part in a forum is rather like a community : contribute to the discussions, be active, join in, have a laugh.

The Bargain Forum has always been a bonus at DVD Forums (so they say) and I think the bottom line is they have to make financial savings somewhere - seems a sensible place to do it.

Have a read of the thread on the General Forum (about 12 pages long !) and read through some of the arguments there - most people are in favour of it :-)

After all, their site is called The DVD Forums and not The Bargain Forums :-)

I shall continue to visit - I`ve learned loads, been entertained, given advice, asked questions about suppliers, sold stuff, bought stuff, swapped trainspotting notes with fans of TV series, etc, etc....

Fair and elegantly put points, I have been reading and enjoying some of the other forums at dvdforums so perhaps I won`t be so hasty about not returning.
Mind you it was a comment by yourself that prompted me to go and have a quick lookysee in the first place.
After all, here at dvdreviewer, I`ve learned loads, been entertained, given advice, asked questions about suppliers, etc, etc....;-))

I think its worth pointing out at this point that any site in which all its users do not pay an equal share of the costs, is not and should never be a democracy. :)

Sometimes you have to do what you feel you have to do to keep your site going, and your users aren`t always going to like it. It often really is just a simple choice between doing something that isn`t popular or not being around anymore. :/

I personally thiink it`s a great idea, and 200 post isn`t high enough, someone can simply pad their way through that in a week. But the amount of low post member there is stupid, only 5% out of 26,000 member have over 200 post !!! Which means 95% of those lurkers won`t be able to hog the resouces on there. I personally is Ok, I have over their limit (set it to 1000 and still wouldn`t make a difference).

And those that dont even say thanks after reading a good bargain, they derserve it.

I am a member of thedvdforums since may 2002 and have approx 137 posts since that date - I dont consider myself a lurker, & have indeed posted bargains since I have joined. When I have used a bargain I have said thanks to the poster, the problem I have with what dvd forums have done is:

I have ordered Angel under the Choices Direct price error & Stargate under the Amazon price error these are still valid threads in the bargain forum, if its a thing that amazon or choices decide to do a argos entertainment type thing (futurama) with these orders, I no longer have access to the threads for help while others who have 200+ posts can help each other out and discuss what happens down the line.

I am newish to the whole dvd thing but I have learned alot from dvdforums since I have joined, I like the whole bargain section because there is no way of finding bargains like this usually.

I am now a member of dvd.reviewer and will try and make valid posts where I can but I notice on thing on this forum is that posts arent considered as important as they are on dvdforums and there isnt the back answers and infighting when a error or duplicate post is made.

anyway this is my first post on dvd.reviewer and I would like to say hi

The name is ed people call me neo

Sorry RJS but I disagree with your disagreement, unless there`s a secret fee paying section where you wear a blindfold and roll up your trouser leg, I understood that the forums were public and free ( the very definition of a forum ) and the very essence of democracy.
Having ran a £ 2 million turnover company for many years, I agree with, and applaud any business who make the hard decisions and stick by them.
Its a dog eat dog world. P
