do you prefer original or redux?

floyd_dylan (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 8th January 2003, 19:18

With films being tampered more times than ever, do you prefer the originals or do you think the changes impove the film?

For example:-

Star Wars trilogy Original or Special Edition

Apocalypse Now Original or Redux

E.T. Original or 2001 edition

Star Trek: Motion Picture Original or Directors Edition

Terminator 2 Original or Special Edition or Ultimate Edition

Aliens Original or Special Edition

Abyss Original or Special Edition

Blade Runner Original or Directors Cut

Leon Original or Directors Cut

Robocop Original or Directors Cut

I don`t mind director`s cuts, which often deliver superior versions of the movie, for example T2, where the cinematic release had important scenes cut out, or the extra violence in Robocop.

I do however strongly object to directors redoing effects, Star Wars is a classic that should be left alone, I really hope the DVD release contains the original movie, but I`m sure it won`t.

Star Wars - dont mind.

Redux - thought the inclusion of the French family section did a lot as the French were quite siginificant in Vietnam and dont recall them being in any other American `Naam` films.

E.T. - - both good - - dont mind the upgrading of picture and so on, imho just makes for more pleasurable viewing.

Star Trek - aint watched yet

T2 - did enjoy the extra bits with taking chip out of head and so on and the inclusion of visions of Kyle Rees - -quite a siginificant link back to the first film and whole paradox of the guy he sent back is his father and so on.

Aliens extended edition purely for the wicked scene with the motion sensor machone guns.

Abyss - -what were the differences?

Bladerunner - -ot seen both versions

Leon - see above

Robocop - uncut killing of the first office guy by ED209 was way over the top but very much Verehoven and so a must keep.

To add to the above LOTR-Fellowship extended edition was again a more full and enjoyable viewing.

"Abyss - -what were the differences"

Oh, not much, just an extra 28 minutes of footage!

Superb movie

Star Wars - not too bothered but Greedo shooting first is a big no no in my book.

Apocalypse Now - Prefer Redux, but I don`t think the French plantation scene is very interesting, even if it is "significant".

E.T. - Don`t mind. I think they did a good job sprucing it up while keeping the feel.

Star Trek - Crap. No matter what you cover a turd in, when you bite into it, its still s***.

T2 - Director`s Cut much, much better.

Aliens - Same as T2.

Abyss - I don`t really like the Abyss that much.

Blade Runner - Director`s Cut is better.

Robocop - More blood, more fun.

FOTR Extended Edition - Much more fleshed out and more enjoyable.

I was enjoying having the house to myself and settled down to watch the copy of redux I bought in Cyprus last March.
It was superb, I thought it was a big improvement over the original release
at least up to the layer change, Eh where`s the next layer Doh !
Moral of the story :Don`t buy iffy dvd`s on holiday, it`s a long way to take it back. ;-((

i prefered the original apocalypse now to the redux, merely because of the change in martin sheens character that the new footage adds. he acts completely out of character in the scene where he steals kigores` surfboard.

...personally I thought Redux was excellent and think that adding footage is always welcome especially when it adds to the movie`s overall pacing and story-telling (FOTR anyone?). However, on a slightly different topic, I`m not sure I agree with adding/updating special effects. Had a quick look at the Star Wars Special Editions the other day on VHS and must say that the added "special effects" are already starting to look very "unspecial". Time for an re-rerelease George...

I think the majority are for the best.

But Blade Runner was spoilt imho, the ending to the directors cut is no where near as good as the original, just my opinion though.

Depends on the film doesn`t it. You can`t say "all originals are better" can you?

I preferred the extra content in Star Wars and Lord of the Rings as, for me, they improved the experience.

On the other hand, I hated Apocalypse Now Redux - the extra scenes added nothing and in fact detracted from the feel of the movie. How could a French plantation with `50s armed French troops survive into the late 60`s/early 70`s? That was Copola saying "hey, did you realise the French were here first and *they* got beat, well I`m ramming it down your throat just to make sure. Thanks Mr F-C, some of us knew that already. It was a freaky time-warp that spoiled the feel of the film, for me.
