What`s using all my memory??

sj (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 24th December 2002, 16:05

Running XP Pro with 512 MB ram.
When I run Task Manager, in the Processes tab, there doesn`t seem to be anything untoward - a few processes with `Mem Usage` of around 20,000K and then downwards. I thought this was the amount of RAM each process was using. A quick addition of all the processes seemed about 160-190 thousand K.
If I switch to Performance tab, the PF usage meter is around 190MB.
The Physical Memory bit on the right shows Total 523760 (K) but available is now down to 53000 (K).. PC`s started to run really slow..
I am running Kazaa Lite with a download running. In the Processes tab though, this is only using around 7,500K which seemed OK as I thought it would just be writing to disk. However, closing Kazaa and the available memory goes right back up to almost 400000. Opening up again and it slowly goes down....

Anyone explain????????

I know you said Kazaa Lite, which is what I use as well, but have you run Lavasoft`s Adaware recently - just in case?

I`m using Win2000/512MB and I find that IE6 doesn`t unload itself from memory when I`ve closed it down. I can sometimes find more than 8 instances of IE running in the backgorund which I have to close by hand to free up resources else the computer can crash.

Are there any instances of apps still running even though they`re closed? One way to see might be do a reboot and look at the processes running, then later in the day see what kind of other things are still there that shouldn`t be. Hardly scientific! You can always pop onto the MS support website and hunt around.

It always seems to show a few meg even if you`re not doing anything, look here for a list of services (and how to do it) that you can turn off to save some memory and get a bit more performance :)
