I have ordered 10 DVD`s from Hong Kong and now been told I will have to pay VAT. The total cost of the DVD`s including shipping was £74 does any one know about how much VAT I have to pay. This all of asudden doesnot seem to be a bargin.

Kind Regards

You have to pay duty and VAT on the amount excluding shipping. If it was £65 excluding £9 shipping:-

£2.28 duty

£11.77 VAT (you pay VAT on the duty too)

£79.05

+ shipping (£9) = £88.05

That`s still only £8.80 per DVD - not that bad!

plus the Consignia/Parcel Force `look at the box and think of a figure` fee

Rich, I thought VAT was payable on the shipping price as well. It only doesn`t count when the £18.00 limit is calculated. I could be wrong and I can`t be mithered to read Form 143 at the moment.

Oi! Less of that - we`re called Royal Mail now...

PeteMc is correct:-

"postage is excluded from the calculation for duty only on private gifts sent by postal means other than Datapost"

so:-

£74

£2.59 duty

£13.40 VAT

£89.99 in total.

My humble apologies Hodge, I can`t keep up with name changes and neither can my local sorting office whose poster tells me that working for Consignia is a bright future.

BTW, does the Royal bit mean they can now charge more as they are once again connected with Her Maj? ;-)

Lol, just kidding mate - truth be known, I can`t keep up with the name changes either. Only been working here 2 years, and the company has had 3 different names!

Does this mean if I order DVD`s and the total cost including shipping is under £18 there is no Duty or VAT
