Favourite bands not to have had a hit...

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Monday, 19th August 2002, 13:38

Personal faves not to feature in the "Guinness book of hit singles" (no bad thing) include:
Husker Du
Swell Maps
Three Mustaphas Three
Monochrome Set
Stump
Planxty
King of Luxembourg
Eat (actually they are in there, but only just!)

Am I alone in liking this bunch? (yes, probably!)
Anyone else with a list?

Never heard of any of those, sorry.

Used to realy like this local band a few years back, Stereophonics they were called, saw them at a pub in Aberdare once, bloody good.

Don`t hear so much about them now, havn`t played any of the local clubs for years, must have split up.

Sugar were pretty decent too, but I think they did actually have a "hit"
A personal favourite of mine are a band from `86 called "Squirrel Bait" noones ever heard of them but they were fantastic.

Irish surf punk band `The Golden Horde`. Saw them live supporting `Zodiac Mindwarp` way back in the 80s and was hooked.

Also, `Inner City Unit` - what Nik Turner used to do between `Hawkwind` albums. They were doing ska punk decades before anyone else (apart from Clash and SLF, I suppose).

Have The Cramps ever had a hit? One of the best bands ever.

A crying shame it is for so many great bands not to have the success that they deserve over most of the shee ite around past and present - but saving grace it is in the knowledge that the bands listed so far, and so many others (Mary My Hope - Family Of Noise - Mr Bungle - Love and Rockets etc) that MTV - with all its bastard offspring and radio 1 won`t have the chance to play all your `obscure` faves to death so much so, that you never want to hear them again.

Red Guitars (Hull-based band who supported The Smiths in the early 80`s) were great!
Jale (early 90`s Seattle-based all-girl band, signed to Sub Pop) also did not get the recognition they deserved.
I think I will have to go and get my old vinyl out now ....
