Time/Tiny Laptop offers, any good??

kiff (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 7th August 2002, 23:28

I have been thinking of getting a laptop for a while now, and at the moment Time/Tiny (Computerworld) have been advertising in all the papers various "limited offers", at the mo it`s the 1600+ athlon, with 30gig DVD/CD-R combo etc etc for £1200 pay in May 2003.

This offer looks good to me as the spec is high and the componants are of good quality, but all the stories I have heard about both companies in the past is making me think twice i.e poor after sales, poor build quality etc etc.

If anyone has either bought one or knows what they are like (laptop and company), I would be greatful for any info you have. This offer end soon (10th Aug I think) so asap with any thoughtful insite.

Cheers
kiff

I know 2 people who have bough from time and 3 from tiny, none have anything nice to say about the companies.

I know Tiny have a problem with USB ports, certain products won`t work.
try http://www.higrade.com very reasonable and you get a worldwide guarantee. Other than that stick with a company you know, Dell are expensive, Toshiba very good but give you thing that you won`t use to knock the price up. The new Sony is good, you can put a minidisk player/sub into it, priced around £1700 for a P4 1.7Ghz stay well away from advent, they overheat easily.

I`ve never heard anyone have a good experience of Time and Tiny really. In fact I remember a few years back when one of the computer magazines urged people to write in about Time as they had received so many complaints about them they were compiling a file.

As for major manufacturers. I find Dell are very reliable and customer support very good. Toshiba have a reputation for good products and the ones I have used have always been reliable. IBM are very robust but expensive for the spec. Sony`s machines are usually made Toshiba`s factories prices are ok but their software bundles seems to be skewed towards the digital image editing fraternity. Compaq`s range of EVo and Armada`s are good, avoid the Predario range as they were degined for the domestic market and not business use.

I wouldn`t go for Tiny or Time, cutomer service is rubbish, there just not up to par with what consumers expect. I would go for a Dell or an Evesham (check spelling). These two companies are the best. I have a Dell laptop. It went wrong after about a month because the hard drive and the cd rom went haywire but Dell apologised fixed everything and replaced my cd rom drive with a dvd rom drive to say sorry all this within a week. Since then I have had no problems at all and if I have any query`s I just send an e-mail and they reply within hours.

THe best buy with 2 Meg processor & more than anything else is the Medion from ALDI, there may be a few around as they were keeping this offer open for a little while, it also got a good review in Computer Active, it has firewire & comes with DVD -CD-rewritable combi, software for camcorder etc & so so much more. £1,199. I got this one & had been looking around for months.

I, foolishly, went to Tiny for my computer a couple of years ago and from day 1 they were unnervingly competent at being absolute a*seholes.

They gave me the wrong delivery date for my computer (which resulted in me wasting a days holiday from work), the customer service was appalling...not to mention rude & arrogant, I had the engineers out 3 times within a couple of months due to faulty products...believe me I could go on & on.

Now another pile of sh*te has seen fit to take over what was already a useless bunch of tossers and **** it up even more. I am now told my four year premium warranty which I took out (& paid for...yes I paid for a service you money-grabbing bunch of useless tw*ts) on my comp etc isn`t worth the ****ing paper it`s printed on.

So, I would advise anyone who will listen to stay away from anything to do with Time/Tiny, unless you want to be taken for a very expensive ride.

P.S. Just about everyone I have spoken to who has bought anything from these clowns have had similar experiences.
