Steam Machine beta hardware is out in the wild

Valve began sending out the first batch of its Steam Machine living room PCs over the weekend, and those lucky people who got their hands on the devices have been giving us glimpses into what we can expect.

The above video in particular shows the innards of a Steam Machine, and over on Imgur, someone has uploaded a whole bunch of images of unboxing the machine, which came in a rather tidy wooden box. Don't worry, we're jealous too.

Valve gives up-close look at third-party Steam Machines

Partners were leaked earlier this week, but Valve confirmed the following companies:

Alienware, Alternate, Cyberpower PC, Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, Gigabyte, iBuyPower, Material.net, Next, Origin, Scan Computers, Webhallen.com, Zotac, and Maingear.

there's some well known names there, so that's promising, and got to love their spin...

Quote:
When one journalist asked if Valve's Steam Machines would be able to catch up with Xbox One's 3 million units sold so far, Newell quipped, "Well it'd be hard for them to catch up because we're at 65 million," referring to the amount of registered Steam users.

Valve to show SteamVR hardware, controller, and new Steam devices at GDC

Today Valve announced that it plans to showcase previously-unannounced SteamVR hardware at GDC next week, alongside new iterations of the long-awaited Steam Machines hardware and the final version of the Steam Controller.

Valve has plans to showcase a "family" of both Steam Machines and "new living room devices" at the show, it says. So the focus will not be solely on the PC-like Steam Machines announced in 2013 (which were last showcased over a year ago.) The company had already promised that Steam Machines would be "front and center" at next week's show.

Valve: 'Steam Machines aren't exactly flying off shelves'

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/316107/Valve_Steam_Machines_arent_exactly_flying_off_shelves.php
Quote:
Earlier this week Valve dialed down the presence of Steam Machines on its digital store by delisting the device from the Steam hardware tab, and replacing the dedicated hardware page with a search list containing just four Steam Machines.

Quote:
In a statement posted on the Steam Community forum, Valve said the delisting was indeed the result of poor sales, but noted that it hasn't stopped striving towards "a competitive and open gaming platform."

Talking of Steam Link...

Two free new apps — the Steam Link app and the Steam Video app — are preparing for launch in the coming weeks, both designed to extend Steam’s suite of services and accessibility.

The Steam Link app, slated to launch the week of May 21st, allows gamers to experience their Steam library of games on their Android (phone, tablet, TV) and iOS-based (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) devices while connected via 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet to a host system (Mac or PC), with Android access initially offered in beta. The Steam Link App will feature support for the Steam Controller, MFI controllers, and more across both platforms.

“The supply of physical Steam Link hardware devices is sold out in Europe and almost sold out in the US,” Valve said in yesterday’s announcement. US folks, cross your fingers and hit the store.

I have one! I don't use it at all now, but maybe if I ever get a TV in the bedroom I'll set it up.

I don't use mine at all either, but my other half (her of the mysterious derivative Skyrim review) uses hers all the time and now has:

1,958 hours on Skyrim
798 hours on Skyrim SE

I have a retropie box in the living room, I was tempted to add this to it... then I realised I have a games PC in the living room already.
