Page 1 of Arcade fans? (MAME specifically)
Gaming and Consoles Forum
Anyone else here a big classic arcade fan? I was wondering if we could get enough of us interested, would people be interested in a sort of offline game league? Everyone picks a classic, we go through one a week, you submit the highest score via a screenshot at the end of the week, kinda thing?

Yes, i`m interested.
I am using my modded PS3 just now to play all these classics with HD shaders and am loving it.
I have to warn you though, my initials stayed near the top of my local arcade machines for quite some time....especially Space invaders and Galaxian
I have not kept up with Mame for years on PC.....how is it now?......i would love to play the original Killer Instinct 1+2 without any of the sound issues or slowdowns that were there a good 5 years ago when i tried it.
Can you play these games now without any problems?

No slowdown at all. I only tried KI 1 tho. Not a great fan of fighting games, well that sort anyway. Prefer Kung Fu Master myself.

Need to try out KI again then, i am a big beat em up fan and this was one of the best at the time.
Can you point me to a stable MAME emulator then that can do the job?
Cheers.

RE: Arcade fans? (MAME specifically)
Guys,
Please help me. I love the old classics and I hear about MAME and I would love to get into it, - would love to build a cabinet, but I dont really understand about emulators nor how i would go about building the cabinet.
If anybody has the time could they let me know an idiots guide to getting started.
Your help is very much appreciated.
Hallsey
I built a cabinet. :)
It`s been upgraded a bit since I wrote that, has the same monitor (for now, one day I`ll put in a bigger LCD), but I`ve upgraded the PC (an Athlon 1.3ghz was no longer cutting it) and also put in a much better amplifier (the ancient one I had crackled over time). I run Hyperspin as my front end for it, which isn`t that easy to configure. :/
But anyway, first thing you should do is get to understand emulators, what they do, what you need to use them, etc.
MAME is the most well known of them all, it supports an insane number of games and is updated regularly. For a beginner I`d go with one with an easy to use UI, like MameUIFX.
On top of the emulator, which simulates the hardware that the original arcade machine programs run on, you will need the correct arcade roms for any game you wish to play. If you want to download every single rom for MAME, this is around 228GB so you might not want to do that. :)
Because sometimes roms are dumped badly, and then dumped again properly at a later date, each new version of MAME ends up changing some existing ones, so keeping up to date can be a pain and is a game in itself.
Best place to start getting MAME roms is probably the Pleasure Dome, so go sign up there and look for the first torrent that looks something like this: "[FREE] MAME 0.141 ROMs"
Then ONLY download the roms in the torrent you are interested in, and of course are legally entitled to own! I`ll leave it up to you as to the legal status.
A good way to find out which ones to get is perhaps to run the MameUI, look for a game you want to play, then see what the rom zip file is called, thats what you need to mark in the torrent to download.
My arcade cabinet is basically a proper arcade cabinet I got cheap off ebay (was £10 I think?), cleaned up and then with proper arcade controls (bought from a specialist dealer, though these days you can get them off ebay, but they aren`t cheap as these things are made to take more punishment than your average home joystick) and a coin box joined to the USB/PS/2 port via a handy little gadget called an I-Pac from Ultimarc.

Robert,
That`s cool - I am definatly going to look into this.
Many thanks
Hallsey
RE: Arcade fans? (MAME specifically)
I use mameUIFX32. It`s regularly updated and lets you know which roms are working. You can download the non-working ones and tweak yourself, but it takes a degree of knowledge to get them going. Soul Caliber and Virtua racing work a treat
