PS3 system update 3.21 ... PHAT OWNERS AVOID
If you have a PS3 you will notice there is a system menu update prompt when you sign in.
This updates you to V3.21 which has multiple enhancements for you, especially if you own a PHAT older unit;
This update enhances your experience by plugging a security hole in playing MP4 (I think) files... the fact no one seems to have heard of this hole is immaterial....
It also enhances your unit by enhancing the quality of content downloaded from PSN (Um... haven`t downloaded anything except demos and WTF does enhances mean?!)
The Default System option is deleted.
The option to "install Other OS" is also deleted.
Anyone knowing any of what`s been going on in the PS3 dev world (if you`ve been hiding under a rock or if you have no internet connection for example) will know the real reasons for these changes.
Personally I find it a bit offensive that the update *removes* the functionality of the unit and this could stop me playing online games with it totally.
There are workarounds available at present but due to some members of the internet community posting these to Sony sites they should also disappear very soon :(

I wonder if it will now support .mkv files now...?

Patch the loophole by all means but to completely remove a function that many purchased the unit for is ridiculous (lots of Linux users out there)

mkv playback would be superb.!
As for the removal of the linux option... while I disagree with the removal of a feature that was available when bought - and that Sony recently said it had no intention of removing it, (it isn`t even an option on the slim) I don`t know or know of a single person who either did install it or was interested in doing so. It was quite restrictive anyway and nothing like the functionality you can get from installing it on a PC... but that`s not really the point though......:-!
Because the supposed `hack` was based on linux, taking no risks at all, they`ve simply removed the option altogether.....
