Video review of Ghostbusters (NES) - very very funny

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 3rd March 2007, 13:56

Just watched the video review of Ghostbusters (NES). Takes a little while to load, and its a few minutes long, but its very funny and makes you realise just how far we`ve come along now in the world of gaming.

I used to play this, when I was a young `un, and have quite good memories, but looking back it now it is absolutely appalling. Plus I never actually made it to the stairs level, so I must have been crap at games then.

Watch it here: http://screwattack.com/
(sorry, can`t use the URL button when I`m using Safari on my Mac)

Scroll about half way down the page to find it.

Definitely worth a watch, just to rekindle those retro gaming memories. :D

I had it for the ZX Spectrum. I seem to remember the fact that it actually `said` Ghostbusters was a huge deal back then, no matter how bad it was. ;)

But yeah, like you I never made it to the stairs, and I can`t say I remember any of my friends making it that far either.

Thanks for the link! :)

I didn`t think I`d played it until I saw it, must have had it for the Spectrum myself.

I actually remembered the game being really frustrating from when I was a kid, I think I got to the stairs level a few times but got p***ed off trying to get up them.

Is the new Ghostbusters game they are making going to be the same but in Hi-Def?

Yeah exactly the same apparently, apart from there`s now 33 stair levels rather than 22.

The review is well funny!

Funny thing is, On the Amstrad version, it`s a slightly different game. There is no "final level or stairs" only a congrats message. There is no white box with an inventory, no fuel tanks.. very odd.

I`m glad you said that, `cos I had it for my Amstrad and was 99% sure I had completed it, but didn`t remember the stairs bit!

I remember vacuuming ghosts while driving, but no fuel.

Hmm the NES version looks rubbish! It looks like they`ve taken all the simple gameplay from the Speccy/C64 versions and over complicated it all presumably because they thought NES owners would expect more.

In the superior Spec64 versions, from memory, the following are major differences:

1) There was no shop, you just bought stuff at the start of the game, and anytime you went back to HQ

2) Driving section had no cars to bump into or fuel, the car you drove was HUGE, and all you basically did was hoover up the ghosts you had ran over on the city screen with the hoover (if you bought one)

3) Capturing ghosts only ever had 1 ghost, sometimes he did go mad and you couldn`t get him in time. After a period of time he slimed you and ran away. Capturing it was MUCH harder than it looks on the NES, as you could only fire the trap once, timing was important. You could also only move your men closer together or up and down (I think), but you chose when to turn on your proton streams, although you couldn`t angle them (they were already at 45 degrees) or turn them off.

4) There was no stairs level, when you went to the end you went straight to the top of the building, and fought the end guy. Can`t quite remember how this went, but when you`d done it, the game started all over again, not quite sure if it was harder second time around.

Certainly the speccy version didn`t have music all the way through, and I`m not sure the C64 ver did either. However both had lyrics with a bouncing ball on the title screen.

Yes, you`re right! I remember now. All those things you mention are exactly the same as the C64 version - that`s why the NES version seemed that little bit different on the review. Going to need to see if I can find some comparison screenshots now.
