need advice pc vs 360

coke_dude (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 21st October 2006, 12:20

if Ive got around £300 to spend, what would I be better off? a high end GFX for my pc or a 360?
Currently I own ps2, XBOX purely for XBMC, and obviously a pc but only with integrated GFX
I definitely getting a ps3.. yes Im a fan

but now Im itching to get HD gaming due to recent purchase of HDTV
Im reluctant to get 360 because none of the games impresses me except for Gears of Wars but that wont be launch until next month plus Im sure there are pc games out there as good if not better.

Mostly I play pro evo, sometimes RPG like FFantasy, huge fan of tales of Symphonia (RPG but with 2d fighting instead of turn base thingy). Can play but not a huge fan of FPS... unlike pro evo where I can play anytime anyday playing other genre depends on the mood im in.

At first Im going to buy 360 since Pro Evo 6 launching on 360 next week but after trying few match at my work place yesterday seriously Im not impress... Im sticking to ps2 version for now.

Which games I would like to have on 360: Gears of Wars, and probably kameo, table tennis and Ridge Racer 6

on pc if i get a better card: strategy games and I would need recommendation for adventure games like Kameo etc...plus with more encoding uses x264 my xbox are not able to run them anymore... so would have to rely more on pc for HD playback.

so please anyone.. I need advice! thanks

I would say games console.

You spend £300 now, that`s it for a few years. If you spend £300 on a graphics card next year you`ll want more memory, then maybe a processor.

Also, actually not so true with consoles now, but you generally know once you get it home it`s gonna work, don`t have to worry about drivers, directX, patches etc

the 360 has Lord of the Rings battle for Middle Earth, and most reviews suggest that if you`ec got an HD tv it`s great when you get hang of the controls, so that should prompt EA to release C&C for it and other companies their RTS games.

There`s a few JPN RPGs coming out in the future, Blue Dragon, Squenix have a few project s in the pipeline, not just FF games.

On the other hand PC games are generally cheaper, and will be more RTSs, not sure if Supreme Commander will get console version, that may be reason enough for PC ;)

Another thing worth mentioning is games like Oblivion are out on both. If you have a top of the range PC with £300 graphics card it will look better on the PC. But then in 6 months time, as developers get a better handle on 360, and your PC starts to show it`s age, unless you spend more on your PC the 360 will be better.

Just thought of another plus for PCs, longevity for certain titles with mods etc, if you`re into that sort of thing. I think some 360 games you can design a level, then share it, but PC games you can change so much to change the game.

I`d still say console though. I don`t have a 360 (have a gameCube), but I can never be bothered to play games on the PC, I`m fed up of all that installing and unistalling rubbish! I do it now and again for the odd demo which I`m led to believe will be something special, but thet inevitably end up disapointing (Prey, Just Cause).

gf plays Sims 2 on the PC. Actually they`re a good example of a game which is definitely better on the PC. She enjoyed the console ones they did, but they`re too limited.

why are you def getting a ps3? If you`ve decided then maybe you should upgrade your PC, cos many of the good game franchises will be out on both, and then others will be exclusive, or have limited exclusivity, so you`ll miss out on some quality titles any decision.

Sorry i keep editting my posts cos I`m reading through the weekly gaming news at the mo, so new things pop in my head!

thats 3 to console 0 to pc
as I mentioned above, I play pro evo a lot.. hence ps3 is a must buy
I dont have anything against xbox controllers but sony still have the best controller for footie games. especially pes6 on 360 is utterly dissapointing >:(

what xbox360 games would you recommend for me though.. if im a adventure/rpg fan?
Ill probably get kameo... but what else is there?

all i see is FPS which imo all look the same just get one and it would be enough

i just got another 360, & although it`s very good, the graphics are no where near as good as my pc`s (going off the games i have for both) but xbox live is really excellent, so i gues it`s what you want out of it, personaly i much prefer the pc for the types of games i like (unreal prey bf2 etc) simply because a keyboard & mouse kicks a joypads arse 7 days a week, but the 360`s fun as well, but that said, the only game that grabs me on the console at the mo is dead rising, & even that i`ve not had the chance to really play it :(

if you do go for a pc upgrade, i have the gainward version of this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=362097
but also be aware that this range of card is expected to have a very large price drop very soon (only rumours tho)

EDIT= oh, while i`m here tho, i`ll just have a rant about the 360 version of tomb raider,,,,,,, got it last week, soooooo glad i only payed 17quid for it. absolutely shocking gfx compared to my OLD pc, that was only running an ati X800gto :o

but don`t take that as a general rant about the 360, just that particular game, unfortunately it seems shoddy conversions are still with us :(

Are you playing the 360 through an HDTV Ogster? Games look stunning on my big screen, and easily gives any PC game a run for its money.

yup, & it`s actually the same screen that i use for the pc, but given my screen has a top res of 1920 x 1200 the pc stuff runs at a much higher res than the 360 can put out (depending on the game)

EDIT= ps, i`m not saying the majority of 360 stuff doesn`t look ace, cos it quite often does, i`m saying given the spec of cokes pc as it stands now, then add a 300pound gfx card, then it will be a sheer brute of a machine. but thats also reflected in the overall cost of the pc inc the card, so you would have to expect it to outperform the 360.

ogster
would it make any difference video wise if I get a high end gfx card?
I mean watching dvds, divx etc? I got my xbox to that now but as xbox/xbmc could not play HD due to the slow processor speed.

i don`t think the original xbox could output hi def even if it where a more powerfull machine, it`s just not designed for it :( (which is a shame because i use my original xbox for all my xvid streaming etc) as for dvd`s etc, remember the 360 cannot play hi-def dvd`s. (untill the add-on drive is released) but by the same token, hi-def pc drives will also become affordable soon-ish (hopefully maybe) at the moment hi-def video content is only really available through sky hi-def boxes or download (about 4 gig for 45 mins for top whack hi-def xvid/mkv) but if you want to stream it to the 360 it really needs to be in windows media format. although there are proggy`s that let you stream avi`s, but i`ve not tried them & i don`t know if they handle hi-def etc, tbh, forget hi-def dvd/video formats for now, it`s not realy viable untill the hardware settles down, (although i download a fair bit of hi-def avi to the pc) at the mo, the pc`s the easiest way to watch hi-def other than sky`s rippof hi-def box. & even at one of the lower hi-def resolutions downloaded video is significantly better than standard res, look for stuff at around 1.2gig for a 45 minute episode & you won`t be disapointed, & you can do that now, from the pc without upgrading the gfx card.

& as far as gaming goes, that really depends on the max res of the screen your using, a pc screen will almost always beat a hi-def tv for max res, but the 360 wouldn`t use the extra resolution, neither would hi-def tv/vid. & if your connecting the pc to a standard hi-def tv, then you will still only get the same max resolution that you could get from a 360.

am i making sense :)

tbh, i think we`re in horses for courses teritory. as i say, i find it easier to use my pc for hi-def video content, & a lot of my games look better on the pc because i have a crazy high res screen. if gameplaying is your prime objective, pick the one that has the game you want & get it.

hope this helps....
