Page 1 of So, how close are `they` to cracking the PSP?

I`ve heard that it`s possible to rip PSP discs to PC`s and onto memory sticks but there`s no way of playing them. Yet.
It`s only very early in its life but how far away is it from being cracked? What stands in its way? Encryption on the memory sticks or just finding some way to load them?

Don`t think I`ve broken any site rules in trying to discuss this.

the games are allready available for download if you know where to look (ie, you`re inbox)
but you can`t play em untill the memory stick loader is released, but it`s aparently VERY iminent :)

So how imminent is imminent.. ??..
If it really is cracked this early (before it`s even been released over here!!) that would be amazing.
Imagine the PSP would really take off then. And sales of memory sticks..
See SanDisk have just announced a 2GB stick. Hmmmm, the discs can hold upto 1.8GB I think...
Although I`ve heard the games upto now are much much smaller...

I dont think its imminent at all.. I sit in #PSP on efnet and read loads of what goes on in there, plus a few psp sites, and still think its gonna be a few months before firmware 1.5 is cracked. 1.0 might be within a month or two..

I think the whole "imminent" thing is just hype. Dont forget, most of what you hear/read is just chinese whispers. TeamXecuter said over a month ago "Expect 2 good suprises within a month" and they never came.

2 Days ago a "UMD Dump" program hit the net, which is why there`s now over 25 PSP games available for download. The "loader" isn`t going to be soon - but i`d love to be proved wrong.

Out of curiosity, What firmware do you lot have, I have a USA 1.5, but my dad (who`s a heavy gamer) has a JAP 1.0 so i`ve been messing on his lately.

That`s what I`ve been thinking - it`s been talked about for a while now but nothing`s come out.
I`ve got a US one and it`s 1.50.
I think there`s a 1.51 just come out bu I`m gonna hold off...

The firmware for 1.52 was released within 24hrs of the UMD Dumper program.

Do not upgrade any firmware, because Sony patched against the UMD Dumping method,
The Ver 1.51 update was to patch against homebrew code being ran on v1.0 JAP consoles.

So if you are planning to play downloaded games / emulators etc, dont upgrade anything because there`s even more security in the later firmwares :)

Supposibly tomorrow (Wed 15th) at 4pm GMT ( dont know why they specified a time ), The "Loader" for version 1.50 PSP`s is going to be released by a group, although they have not confirmed that it will be able to run iso versions of dumped games, but probably homebrew emulators at the least... if its real though, there are a few video`s of it doing the rounds, but there`s a few fake video`s too...

so who knows, just have to wait 20hrs to see for sure .. i will post any news when i get back from work tomorrow.
It`ll only work on v1.50 PSP`s, no later versions.

Its potentially going to damage your PSP, and you need 2 Memory Sticks, and it still doesnt allow you to download those *ahem* games you downloaded..
It runs some basic emulators/homebrew, but not the full UMD Dumped games.
but i suppose its a start.. i`ll repost any new news as usual..

PSP Version 1.5 has now been "cracked"

You can now run all homebrew (unlicensed code) on a Version 1.5!
Although you cannot run any of the dumped ISO Games of official PSP Titles on any version still


The program you need to google is KXploit 1.5 v0.3

I`ve had it running, it works, been playing Arkanoid and Pong! :D

Any news on emulators ? I`d love a portable mame emulator.
