Looking for an easy to install Mod chip.........

dusty321 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 19th May 2003, 16:33

.... for the PS2. The model number is SCPH -30003R (early model I think). Been looking at the installation diagrams for the Messiah 2 and dont really fancy soldering 24 wires onto contacts so small so is there any other *easy* way to chip the PS2, also what do I need for a region free console?

Anyone?

not sure about the size of the boot disc on these...i mean the size of the toc on boot discs needs to be higher than that of the game u wish to boot up...

i dont know about it properly now cos i have a messiah in mine but originally games like GTA vice city where problems to boot with a boot disc because of the size of the game itself

the same pc fair will probably supply and fit a messiah 2 for around £80 which might seem steep initially but its pays for itself soon enough and does away with the swap disc hassles, i think there is region x or a downloadable boot disc available for multiregion movie playing...

cant remember if any of the newer modchips include an rgb fix and multiregion as standard i think i read they do but im only on a messiah 1 chip which dosent anyway...sorry cant be more help

The Messiah 2 doesn`t have multiregion for DVD movies either. You don`t need a chip for the RGB fix, just a simple link wire will do (if I remember correctly).

DIYing a Messiah 2 is a pretty major undertaking. It`s not too bad on newer models, but on older PS2s (especially V3 models) it`s stupidly difficult. Believe me, £80 to have one professionally fitted is an absolute bargain :-)

This PS2 is a v5 board but still looks a right pig to chip, the razor method is needed to solder some of the wires ;-(

I`ve heard that the DMS3 chip is supposed to be a pretty good solution as it includes multi-region DVD playback, green-screen fix, and plays games without a boot disc. It`s also flash upgradeable. However I don`t know how good it is in use, or how widely available it is, or how easy to fit (definitely not a DIY case though!). If I could get one fitted in my area for around £80 I might consider it...

You do get solderless chips which basically plug into a bi on the inside of the PS2. Quite easy to fit but the downside is they aren`t as advanced as many of the other chips and require you to use the Boot&Swap method to load DVD-R backups. Allows you to use DVD-R`s etc but doesn`t affect the region etc. I think there`s also a USB plug in one however that was even more limited in terms of functionality, I think it allowed the use of Imports but not DVD-R discs.
