Just got Evolution X chip

Jason Bagnall (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 15th May 2003, 19:19

Ok, I just collected my X-Box, complete with Evolution X, from a mate. Turns out there seems to be alot more to this than I thought! How actually can I transfer media onto my X-Box? My mate mentioned something about needing a Network card? Can someone get me started? I`m totally miffed at this whole Evolution X thing & even the newbie guides arent very illiterate friendly.

And when I try to play a DVD, why does it just stay on `loading`?!

if you mean a dvd movie, then it should just play it (most mods support this) as for the media best thing to do is just stick it on a cd-rw (x-box drives don`t like cd-r`s) check out www.premodded.co.uk for some simple guides to ripping games, i am a little worried about the dvd movie not playing though, is it possible that your friend may have knocked the drive ? if it`s not reading the disc properly it would`nt boot

please let me know how you go on as i am thinking of getting my x-box chipped

HOPE THIS HELPS

I recommend http://www.xbox-scene.com for background reading, there`s everything you need to know on there (and loads you don`t need).

To transfer files to your xbox you need a network card (or similar) in your PC, then you can "ftp" (file transfer protocol) files to or from your xbox. So you need to network your PC to your xbox. If you don`t know a RJ45 from a bar of soap then you`ll want to do some background reading on networking. In short it`s cheapest and easiest with a network card in your PC and a crossover cable that`s long enough to run from your PC to your xbox (shouldn`t cost more than £20 for the card and cable). It sounds daunting to start, but once you figure out the basics (and it isn`t rocket science, I can do it and I`m thick) then you`re up and running.

There`s loads of great ftp programs out there for the PC. Pick one and away you go.

You can back-up your games to your hard drive using "HDD Loader" or similar. You can manage the files on your hard drive using Xcommander or similar, but I generally use ftp as it`s easiest for me.

hmm /me considers writing a beginner friendly guide...

Cheers for the feedback guys! My DVD function does actually work, I wasn`t aware you had to use the Region X software installed. Anyway, looks like I`ll have to grab a Network card, are they a simple game to install?

So in the meantime, what can I actually do with this at the moment? Can you make back-ups of your owned games?

I`ve looked at that site Ogster, helped me understand a whole lot more, but I can`t find anything regarding the backing up games directly from disk to the X-Box`s HD.

the following is from the premodded.co.uk faq page

How to store a game on the XBOX hard drive using XBCopy.
Let the XBOX boot to the Evo-X dashboard, then put the game disc into the DVD drive. Select the `Launch Menu` then `Applications` and choose `XBCopy`. The first thing it asks you is to press the `START` button then it asks for the destination. You have four choices but will only ever use 2 of them, if you have a standard size hard drive then use e/games and if you have upgraded the hard drive then use f/games (by pressing start), this process takes 5-25 minutes and once the full game has been successfully copied over it will automatically appear under >Launch Menu>Games in the Evo-X dashboard.
How to copy files or folders from DVD/CDRW to the XBOX hard drive using boXplorer.
Let the XBOX boot to the Evo-X dashboard, then put the DVD/CDRW disc into the DVD drive. Select the `Launch Menu` then `Applications` and choose `boXplorer`. For this example we will be copying a folder called `Applications` from the DVDr to the xbox e: partition. BoXplorer works with 2 panels if you look in the top right corner you should see the letter `A` for `Panel A` if you press the right trigger it will change to `Panel B` and left trigger changes back again. 1st thing to do is find the `Destination` for your files/folder, make sure you`re on `Panel A` and then press `Start` and in this case we choose `e:DeviceHarddisk0partition1` next to this it also shows you the amount of free space available in gigabytes. Now select parition `E` by pressing the XBOX controller `A` button, you should now see a couple of folders but as we want the `Applications` folder off the DVD in the root of the `e` partition we need to do nothing further on this panel. Now press the right trigger and change to `Panel B`, press `Start` again and now we find the source location which is `d:DeviceCdrom0`, browse the media in the DVD drive by pressing `A` (you can also browse folders within the DVD by selecting A) to select files or folders for copying you need to move to each one individually and press `X` they should be highlighted in blue to show they have been selected so we move to the `Applications` folder and select it with X, finally we can transfer the files. Press the `White` button to bring up the menu and choose `copy` from the list, you are now prompted to hold both triggers and press start which once done will start the copying process!

i`m not familiar with this as my x-box is not yet chipped but it`s worth a go

also is your hard drive the standard size ? if it is you may only be able to fit one or two games on it.

please lett me know how you go on

Thanks for all your help ogster. Sadly, either I`m a total illiterate when it comes to these things, or my version of Evo X is out-dated, as I do not have XBCopy under applications. =(

It`s strange, because I only just had this done a couple of weeks ago. So what now? =(
