Will a UK PS2 play R1 DVD`s, and if not can it be hacked??

YES it can. You can get a ps2 REGION X which is a cd you put in the ps2 and choose what region you want to play 1-6. No need to chip your console. Its great... If you want one cheap check out ebay....

Do you need to put in those upgrade codes from the web site every time you want to play a region 1 DVD, or is it a 1 off process ? If it`s every time the "DVD Region Free" product from Blaze (£6.99 at Play) seems a better deal.

The codes are a one off. My son has a DVD Region X and it works every time, no problems. It even gets past the DVD/RGB cable limitation on PS2s so you get a better quality picture.
