As if anyone cared anyway, but format shifting and backing up CDs and DVDs that you've bought (and presumably Blu-ray too) will be legal in the UK:

I've usually got mine "backed up" 4-6 weeks before the retail date.

I always found the illegality of this bizarre, mainly because Microsoft, one of the stanchest supporters of copyright, has always enabled CD ripping by default in Windows Media Player.
