Which 3D?

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Monday, 20th May 2013, 20:16

The TV is about to be bought and as it comes with a free 3D BD Player I wanted to test it out.
So recommend me a decent looking 3D Film on Blu Ray to buy.

Have heard Life of Pi looks good on 3D sets, but are there any gems I am missing? Was thinking of a Disney title maybe Finding Nemo or Lion King?

I've not seen it in 3D, but I bet Toy Story 3D is fantastic.

Good call. I`ve seen that they have done 3D transfer of 1 & 2 so maybe the box set...

Oh just seen that it`s just over £80 for all three :S

This 3D lark is expensive!

Finding Nemo 3D is out next week, that along with Monsters Inc are amazing on home 3D. Hugo is also very good and can picked up for £5-6.

No one has mentioned Avatar yet. Okay, it`s derivative and not even a particularly good rip off, but it was one of the original `wow` films in 3D. Then there`s Prometheus, the 3D version of which also contains the feature-length making of documentary that`s not available on the 2D release (this is now a trend for Fox titles).

I`ve yet to really see a film that was made by the 3D. Life of Pi was decent, but I watched it again in 2D at the weekend and the story wasn`t affected by the lack of 3D effects. Wreck-It Ralph was pretty good theatrically, but I can`t speak to the BD release. I was somewhat disappointed by Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo in 3D at the cinema though.

Maybe one day I`ll get a 3D set, but I`ve put my plans to buy one of the new Panasonic sets on hold as I`ve had a lot of expense lately (birthdays, decorating, car insurance etc).

Well there`s lots of choice then. I think I`ll go for a cheaper title - probably Hugo and also see if there are any demo disks I can blag from the shop when i buy TV. If i`m impressed I think i`ll go for a disney title...maybe Dredd, again as its cheap!

Dredd is OK in 3D but not a major "wow" until you get to the final scenes... if you`ve seen it you`ll know the ones I mean.

I watched Planet Dinosaur 3D last night and probably one of the best 3D effects I`ve watched yet with both protrusion from the snouts of the Dinos to depth in the wider scenes.
For 7 quid you can`t go wrong with Dredd as a tester, I paid a tenner.

One thing though, I also bought Gnomeo n Juliet cos it was £8 when I did and was a tester for my 3D setup.
I have my Panny 50" TV and my projector run through my Onkyo amp as mentioned before in other threads and after some reading about on forums etc. it appears that HDMi defaults to the lowest standard/setting in the chain.
To clarify: Projector is 1080P 3D capable, TV is 1080P non 3D so my setup should default to a 2D setup.
When I use Gnomeo I can select 3D or 2D via th eprojector but when I use Dredd it defaults and tells me I need 3D hardware for 3D playback.
Disconnect the twin output of the Amp to only output to the Projector and it goes back to 3D without issue.

Don`t understand why one disc can bypass it but the other can`t.
