Both boxes say the movies are in widescreen but my TV detects them as 4:3 and I have to manually switch to 16:9. Have I been sold a dud? My TV has no problems with any other disc.

If this is the Region 2 boxset, containing JP and Lost World, then I have no problem like this using a Sony DVD 336 and a Triniton TV

If the discs are anamorphic widescreen and display correctly after a manual TV change on your part, then the discs aren`t to blame. There`s a quirk with your hardware.
My Sony Wega has a bug in its autoformat so I always have to select the correct display option by hand.

Does it say Anamorphic 1.85 on the picture label actually on each disk. As I saw when JP3 came out that they put P/S versions in some cases which were labelled widescreen in error. You need to check the disk. Otherwise seems a problem with autosensing on either the disk or TV as works fine with my Sony TV & DVD player
