Alien Anthology Bluray set

Gareth Williams (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 30th September 2010, 20:27

Ages ago, when the Alien Quadrilogy came out I made a thread about the picture quality of Aliens on DVD, and how much it sucked ass. Apparently it was something to do with the cameras/film stock they used and therefore wasn`t quite up to the picture quality of the other films.

Skip forward a few years and I come across these screenshots of the newly cleaned up Bluray version...

I`m fairly certain they just went back and reshot the whole film :o

That really does look a bit beyond post processing shenanigans doesn`t it.

I never bought the Quadlrilogy boxset when it came out either, so don`t have to justify buying the new boxset to myself :D

Still won`t pick up until it comes closer to the £20 mark.

I never had a problem with the way Aliens looked. It was very grainy because the film stock wasn`t right for the lighting that Cameron decided to use once filming started (the fallout resulted in him firing the DP). That said,t hey have done a decent job of filtering some of the grain out without completely eliminating it. The colour timing is different, but it does look pretty good to my eyes. Having seen caps from all four the one that concerns me is Alien, which appears to be slightly cropped and have some weird stretching artefact going on. Will reserve final judgement until I have the set though.

The documentary on the Alien film about the origins of the Space Jockey and their relationsip with the aliens makes an interesting watch if not a good coaster

I like the assembly cut of Alien 3. Alien Resurrection`s director`s cut is also better, although it`s still not a great film...

On an annoying note, I was asked to attend the press screening of the new Blu-ray set on the 5th, but I can`t go because like all things PR related it`s in London. Would have got a free copy of the set as well :(
