Page 1 of Is R2 catching R1 up???

Please correct me if I`m wrong, but
1) Is the time delay between R1 and R2 releases getting shorter?
2) Isn`t the quality of R2 releases (in general) better than R1?
3) Are R1 dvds THAT much cheaper than R2 ones (on the Net)?
4) Do you get stung by Customs & Excise if you buy too many R1 dvds in one go from US?

I may seem to be a R1 hater - I`m NOT. It just seems strange that there is this BIG thing about R1 discs. I maybe wrong - please let me know.

1) Yes in some cases. No in others. And there are some R1s that you will never see in R2 in the same form (Robocop Criterion springs to mind)

2) Difficult to say. There are a lot of shoddy discs in both regions. You`d have to take a sample of the films you were interested in to come up with an answer.

3) Again, in some cases they are - depends on discounts, coupons, special offers and a myriad of other things.

4) Depends on the supplier you use

There is a big thing about R1 discs for many reasons. A couple of mine are:-

- discs available that aren`t available over here (examples Monty Python - the TV series and the films - bar Meaning of Life which was released recently)
- obscure titles that will never come over here (I`m thinking mostly of music titles in my case)

I prefer R1 myself as they are generally cheaper and the extra features are often better e.g. Fight Club.

Do you think you would be able to buy an R2 version of Toy Story 1 & 2 for £17.99 in the shops. Thought as much.

Also my personal fav movie Halloween is only available on R1 which explains Rich`s point about some titles only being available on R1. T2 is another example.

Really though I don`t care if its R1 or R2 as long as the disc itself is good.

Halloween is "Region 0" not region 1, which is just aswell since its the best horror flick ever made! Anyone with a region 2 player can watch this film. I recommend the limited edition 2 disc set.
