2012, customer reviews from the back of a cab...

Jimbo :oÞ (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 16th November 2009, 17:41

Picked a few people up from local cinemas who have gone to see this now.
EVERY (and I mean every) one the customers have been pretty quiet and not in "buzz" mode from being at the cinema.
No bouncy bouncy, no chat in the car about how this bit or that bit was (one of the perils of cab driving is when you pick up from a cinema you invariably hear spoilers of movies you want to see but haven`t yet)

Comments have included:
"crap" (<~~ most common)
"dragged on for ages, good effects and crap story" (<~~ 2nd most common)
"waste of money"
"Worst movie... EVER" (no, wasn`t comic book guy! lol)
"Just wanna get home now and have something to eat then bed... that was a right waste of time"

Certainly coupled with the odd review I`ve read in papers saying similar means this is one time the ticket money is staying firmly in ma pocket!

Don`t think there was ever any doubt. Those Roland Emmerich disaster films are usually rubbish, the only exception being Independence Day because that at least had a few charismatic actors in it (not Jeff Daniels obviously).

Emmerich is a hack!
Take the VFX out of any one of his films and all that`s left is a big pile of nothing, the non-action scenes in his films are always excruciatingly bad!

He`s kind of like a bigger budget Paul WS Anderson. :¦

You could say the same thing with Lucas and his Star Wars prequels, or Michael Bay with the Transformers movies. In fact you can say it with a lot of big budget special effects movies, which have most of the time minimal storyline, or character development.

Star Wars prequels had a very in depth plot of trade disputes and political machinations. ;)

i think it`s a bit unfair to slate 2012, mainly because it`s a popcorn movie, you into it expecting to be entertained with mindless plot good SFX & a decent chunk of action, & thats what it delivers, it`s by no means a great movie (frankly it just about scrapes in as "good") but it is what it is. if you go & watch it expecting depth & plot, then you realy are wasting your time :) but if your just after a cheap thrill that burns a couple of hours of your time, then you`ll probably enjoy it...

After reading Harry Knowles` review over at AICN, I get the impression Emmerich has made an effort to make an involving, human drama at the middle of all the thud and blunder but has failed miserably. I know we all hate Jim Cameron`s Titanic, but that movie has a simple love story at its heart and its heart is its strength. That`s what made it so successful. People latched on to the doomed love story and the disaster became secondary.

A bad disaster movie is one where you go to see a bunch of people die in increasingly futile ways. A good disaster movie is one where you invest a bunch of emotions in a small group of people and don`t want to see them deaded.
