Page 1 of Russian Film Help - Answer Found
DVDs & Films Forum
OK down the pub last night watching a subtitled film (for once no hockey, curling or the like) from Russia, similar sort of style to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
No idea what it was called as it kinda sucked me into watching it & want to find out what happens at the end as Kerri turned off the TV & kicked me out the pub.
The film starts off in blackness & is told from the POV of the principle character who finds somewhat to his surprise that he is in Russia around the 1890`s. Other people seem to be oblivious to him except for one character who acknowledges him & they walk through The Hermitage of Peter the Great discussing the artwork.
The other character seems to be from the past & they also encounter a couple of men in later scene who are dressed in 1920\30`s middle class suits who also seem to be surprised at where they are & acknowledge them.
Any clues or ideas from you knowledgable types?
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
Heartily glad that I don`t have to learn how to spell Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Nightwatch and Daywatch are the only 2 Russian films I`ve seen, doesn`t sound likr one of them!
have you not got a TV guide/yesterday`s newspaper you could have a look at to see what was on?
Only a virtual beer alas.

Alas no it was a paper free night down at Foxeys. As I don`t subscribe to any TV service provider, listings in the free papers are one of the first things to be taken to the recycling bin.

:D Well done that man, that is indeed the film "Russian Ark". Simply stunning & seemingly done in one shot\take, bit hard to tell with constant adverts. >:(
A pint of Foxeys beer awaits you in Okotoks*.
*Airfare, transportation & accomodation not included when claiming the pint.

Yes, it was done in a single take - there`s at least one point (in a concert hall IIRC) where you can see an extra trying to run out of camera shot. Not on my list of great films of all time, but certainly worth a viewing for its perspective on Russian history.
Pretty hard for any self appointed censors\TV companies to make any cuts in that film. :D
