I`ll be purchasing a PS3 in a few days time and am looking at using it for viewing Blu-Ray films mainly. What `must have` disc should I own....with regards to picture and sound quality to show it off to people!! 8)

there was a similar thread before, might be worth search. But I normally say Starship Troopers, looks like it was shot yesterday.

My current disc of choice is Ratatouille - the escape from the house through the sewer and the view of Paris is stunning. In terms of sound, I haven`t heard anything much better than the DTS 7.1 track on Dark City.

For me, some of the "must haves" to start you off would be:

Planet Earth Box Set- absolutely awesome on BD, a must in your BD collection.
Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy- Which I think is the best BD picture by far.
The Mummy, Mummy Returns (available at Tower- region free)
Ice Age 2.
Pixar movies

This is to just name a few. You will find that on some movies, the transfer to 1080p isn`t as great as others. For example, Terminator 2 on BD- althouigh it`s a 1080p disc, the picture isn`t as crisp as more recent movies.

Also, have a look here

You can download 1080p clips and play them on your PS3.

You can also get HD trailers for free on the Playstation Network.

It`s to do with the way it was shot and the quality of the film stock etc. Newer films are bound to look better, especially if the old film hasn`t been completely remastered. The trouble is people`s expectations. They want everything to look like it was shot on super-crisp digital video, when in fact it was shot on film. The most comment complaint you hear about discs is `it`s grainy`. Grain is what makes up the image...

Anyway, surely you`d be better off getting a film you like? Someone mentioned Starship Troopers earlier, and while it does look quite good, it`s not demo material. There`s also a new release on the way that will probably look better (although you have to buy it in a boxed set with the other two unless you import). Spider-Man 3 looks okay, but the film is crap. Actually, a lot of really good looking discs have crap films on them...

300 is a great looking disc, but people are put off by the (intentional) grain.
Resident Evil: Extinction looks and sounds great, but it`s not a good film.
Aliens vs. Preator: Requiem ditto the above.
Blade Runner is a great remastering job for such an old film. Looks/sounds new.
Hellboy looks good, so does Cloverfield (although not by traditional standards).

If you just want something that looks good and aren`t worried about the film then yeah, the Pirates movies (although the first one has framing issues) and the Spider-Man films are great (the first two are good films as well). Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer looks nice as well. Beowulf of course, because it`s all CG. Any Pixar film.

Funny, I was just reading an article on grain here on homecinemachoice
and how it may become the new "black bars" above and below the image argument.

Couldn`t agree more about Spiderman 3 being crap. Watched it the other night and found it boring and disjointed. Coincidently I`ve just watched 300 (ok film but not as good as I hoped but I liked the style of it) and FF:RotSS which again was ok. Also saw Blood Diamond which I did enjoy.

I still haven`t bought a bluray film but I`m currently leaning towards the Pirates box set. Enjoyed the first one, nearly enjoyed the second and haven`t seen the third. It`ll be something the kids can probably watch as well.

If you want to show your system off, Pixar`s Cars is superb. Shame the film isn`t that good ;)
