the Mission impossible films are turd: discuss.

watching one on tv now. As i suspected from the trailers/shots/anecdotes: all soulless, unthrilling CGI-w***ery. A mishmash of 360-degree superbike turns, black men in wraparound shades with leather trenchcoats, revolving freezeframe capture shots, lots of 180-degree turn-with-a-gun scenes rendered in gaudy colours.

Tom cruise also, I would dismiss as an underdeveloped CGI creation, but I saw him in Top Gun, which was made in the `our schools got an RM Nimbus in the technology lab but Darren Braithwaite from the third form broke it` era of computers, so it seems he`s real.

Well as real as a scientologist can get, anyhow.

Hi there. I went to the cinema and watched the third one today. I thought it was a lot better than the second one.

I`ve only seen the first one and thought it was pretty s***e - the second one looked worse, so I didn`t bother. And now the third..... I just have no interest in seeing it (:¦ .

First one - awesome spy thriller with an climactic explosion that IMO remains unbeaten in its total awesomeness 8)

Second one - pretty crap, though I`d love to see John Woo`s director`s cut.

Third one - a lot of similarities to Alias, which can only be a good thing. Easily the best of the three, though it kinda seemed like Phillip Seymour Hoffman merely turned up and read his lines :/ The helicopter chase was great, especially the way...

SPOILER:
it cuts from sheer adrenaline to sudden sadness as Keri Russell dies. Felt like a real kick in the balls

Also contains a cool Bond reference (Greg Grunberg asking for a Vodka Martini :D )

So not really what I`d call turds.

Can`t really put them all in the same basket as they`re all completely different in style and tone. First one is a cold and calculated thriller all about the plot with little character development to speak of, but I love it. Second is almost the opposite, takes time to develop one-dimesional characters (never a good idea) in an attempt to warm things up, and there is no plot to speak of... it`s a joint Tom Cruise/John Woo w***-fest and actually becomes so stupid that it`s in the same territory as The Transporter. Silly but fun.

The third resembles a far more conventional 90s action film, but with a few tweaks to the genre. It`s not as iconic as the first two (not a bad thing) but easily the more accessible and likely to entertain a larger mixed audience. It tries again, like M:I-2 did, to develop the characters, and although it isn`t 100% successful in this area, it at least does put some serious edge and reason to all the mayhem and madness.

Personally, I`ve been a fan at some time or other of each director of these films so I can`t give an unbiased opinion. But I do love the first and third films, and can watch the second (come on, it`s beautifully shot, great score and some hilarious bad guys).

I enjoyed the first two and will definitely see the third. I think the title sort of gives away the nature of the films - if they were called Mission Possible I wouldn`t expect to see a helicopter flying down the channel tunnel or TC doing a front wheelie whilst shooting out the bad guys car (cool 8) ).

The second one is definitely style over substance but that`s the sort of man I am (at least as far as my films are concerned ;) ). And I have to say that the start of MI:2 is one of my favourites - the choice of music was sublime.

Finally I can quite happily ignore TC`s public persona and just concentrate on his performances in his films, and he always comes across as fully commited to the role he`s playing.

So overall - no they are not turd.

I also think that the reason no one liked the first one was because Jim Phelps was SPOILER:
the bad guy
which p***ed a lot of the fans of the original off.

I liked it because it uses a lot of De Palma`s trademark who dunnit skills, even if you didn`t like it, you must admit that the final chase on the train was awesome, and when the theme tune kicked in you really was rooting for Cruise.
