Is nothing Sacred? Or do the US film companies think their fellow countryman is as thick as pigs*** that they won`t know what an `Roundabout` is?

Plus it`s been completely re-dubbed, Even jon Stewart said it was pointless, it`s just to make more money over there if there`s recognizable voices...

I thought one of the funniest "name changes" was when the US cut the "III" from "The Madness Of King George III" - because they were afraid it would put the public off from seeing it thinking they hadn`t seen the first two!! Classic! :)

All part of the world domination by the Americans. If anyone else has it, we want it, or in replica.
You type any place name and you will find America has one.
They have the Eiffel Tower, Venice, The Pyramids and so forth.
They even have the real London bridge. :D

I am American and no offense taken. I suppose only those who live in New England should know what roundabouts are. I slightly remember seeing them when we did a road trip through there when I was a kid.

It absolutely drives me mad when the studios take UK ideas and "Americanize" them just to save the quick buck and make more money.

Studio execs: Guys, use the dozen braincells among you to think up new ideas for entertainment. Do something different for a change. Be ORIGINAL for once.

I don`t think anyone in NYC or Hollywood could have come up with the concept of LOM or sustain the energy through out the first series. A US series would have resorted to "didn`t they do things strangely or funnily back then?". LOM just had the right touch.

I thought Funland was also an exceptional production. That was original. What does it mean that it was shown on BBC Three rather than BBC ONE?

To be fair, wasn`t the original Magic Roundabout french and when it was dubbed in to english it was pretty much rescripted for the English audiance?

The Magic Roundabout (Le Manège Enchant), was French made, but with English animators & then redubbed (& replotted into something that made sense!!) by Eric Thompson.

The film was released last year in the US as "Sprung".

In France the series was heavilly based around Pollux (Dougal), so this rebranding is probably closer in this respect (even if they can`t spell Dougal).

I think they are banking on the short term memory span of the US market. ;)


I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

But Eric Thompson was pure genius whereas the film looked er below par and the redubbing was on the basis of known stars and removing any long words rather than because the language was completely foreign. There were complaints from the voice actors union when they started using stars rather than those experienced in dubbing an imated features though i`m not sure about the merits of the case

Ofcourse I only remember one movie which the studios deemed needing redubbing with American actors and that was Mad Max (the first movie). Have any other British or Commonwealth films been treated thus?
