I know there is a legal/copyright issue preventing the release of these, but does anybody know exactly what it is? Will it ever be resolved?
It`s not fair - I want my 60`s Batman in beautifully packaged dvd box-sets and Adam West commentaries!! >:(
RE: The 60`s Batman series on DVD...
Concensus is there`s somebody at DC Comics (part of the Time Warner group) who`s sitting on the rights clearances for the 1960s Batman series. The only concrete fact in this fiasco is that the Adam West series was made and is owned by Twentieth Century Fox. Some people say Warner Bros don`t want the "camp" show damaging the street cred of their big Batman franchise (first the Tim Burton version and now this Begins boll*cks). The upshot is that TCF desperately want to do season sets of the show, Adam West and Burt Ward want to do commentaries, links and anything else they can do as it`ll all be a nice little earner for them. Millions of fans want to see the show released as they`ve come to their senses and realised Adam West`s measured... delivery... of weighty... lines.... is the definitive version of the caped crusader. BUT there`s somebody or a group of somebodies within the Time Warner group who`s intent on piddling on everybody`s barbecue.
Will it ever be resolved? Only if Rupert Murdoch buys out Time Warner and fires the feckers responsible. ;)

I hope this isn`t true - the 60`s Batman series is a classic! Sure, it`s very different to the more modern Batman movies, but that`s what`s so great about the character - there are so many versions and ways to portray Batman: the comics, the graphic novels, the B+W serials, the 60`s series, the Burton and (gulp!) Schumacher movies, the animated series, and now the current movie.
I always thought the 60`s series was hugely successful and very fondly remembered?

Correct on both counts. I`d have the entire run like a shot. I`d even settle for a repeat showing on the box at a sensible time. Fox know it would be one of their biggest tv releases, but the sticking point is at Time Warner. There is always the possibility they want a bigger cut of the profits than Fox are willing to share, or they just don`t want Fox to make a red cent out of their number one franchise.
Mind you, that wouldn`t explain Sony being able to release the B+W serials, Anchor Bay being able to release the Back To The Batcave movie, or for that matter Fox being able to release and rerelease the 1966 Batman movie shot at the same time as the series.
There`s a long-standing series of threads on the issue over at the HTForums.

That site is so illegal! How do they have the brass neck to run a web site when they`re looking at a good thousand years in chokey if the Feds or the MPAA find out about it?
