superman 2 (director`s cut)

technosonic (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 30th January 2005, 20:47

Ok,where do i start.
There is supposed to a extended edition of superman 2.There was a article in a magazine about extra scenes shot, but because there was a dispute with the directors the film was cut together by warner brothers. So there are quite alot of scenes missing.
Now,what brought this up recent.I had a friend come over from Australia, and like myself we were talking about movies most of the time.We started talking about superman 2,and he said
"there is a extended cut about,as it was shown on our television at home. There was a scene i fully remember, when General Zod >:( lifted up the little boys father). The boy told zod to let him go so he drops the father, turns round and kills the boy with his eyes".
"Also there was alot of extra scenes with Marlon Brando">

It would be fantastic to get a special edition of superman 2 out. What do you think.
If any one else has any more knowledge of extras scenes please inform me.cheers

Both films were shot together and Richard Donner was the director of both. However the producers fired Donner midway through S2 and replaced him with Richard Lester. A load of footage was then apparently ditched (there`s no proof of this). It`s unlikely any special edition will appear in the near future due the directors guild policy of having only one directors name on the credits and the studios reluctance to search for the missing footage. It`s a shame no ones making an effort to sort this out because the extended version of S1 adds some great Brando scenes.

Masses of Superman footage was stored at Pinewood throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It should by rights have been burned because the Salkinds (the producers) allegedly hadn`t paid their storage fees for years. Fortunately, the librarian at Pinewood hung on to the stuff as it might be worth something in the future and was proved right when WB were putting together the SE of Superman The Movie. A lot of the Donner version of S2 was also preserved as the two movies were shot back-to-back initially. Ultimately Donner had to concentrate on getting Superman The Movie completed for the handover date, and when he tried to return to the second film was unceremoniously fired by the Salkinds.

There may be a rights issue holding up an SE of Superman 2, because the Salkinds were royally p*ssed off by not getting a bigger piece of the Superman The Movie SE pie, and that`s why there`s no R2 editions of either Superman 3 or 4. They got an injunction stopping WB from further exploitation of the films they produced. As WB effectively own the Superman character, this means the Salkinds can`t exploit the movies either so unless that legal mire has been resolved there ain`t nothing going to happen.

Then Tigger looked up at the ceiling, and closed his eyes,
and his tongue went round and round his chops, in case he had left any outside,
and a peaceful smile came over his face as he said, "So that`s what Tiggers like!"
Which explains why he always lived at Kanga`s house afterwards,
and had Extract of Malt for breakfast, dinner and tea.

I`m not convinced at all - I`ve never heard of an extended cut of S2 - the extra footage of Brando probably came from S1 as I mentioned in the earlier post.

There are missing Brando scenes but they`ve certainly never been on telly, no matter what "yer mate" says. There are several different TV versions though.

The Supeman Cinema link on the above page used to have a lengthy analysis of the various versions available, including stuff that has never seen the light of day, but the link doesn`t seem to be working.

The article on the whole extended Superman 2 fiasco was in Hotdog or Empire last year, which went into some depth on what was excised - as far as I can remember the scenes in there currently with Supes` mother were originally filmed with Brando, whose character (spirit?) sacrificed himself later on to give him his powers back. Which makes a bit more sense than what happens in the film, where after being told he can never go back to what he was... he does, just like that. Which is handy for him.

Damn, I`d love to see that footage! Just think, a bumper 2 disc SE of Superman 2, with either a new cut of the film or a ton of deleted scenes... *sigh* Well, I can dream.

If anyone can direct me to a site with more info on what was cut (likewise for Superman IV, which I understand has around 45mins of material missing - how about Superman III?) I`d be very happy.
