Abyss.....verdicts!

ickle yoda (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 10th May 2001, 22:31

Ok I think I am the only person here who hasnt seen the abyss and after reading a few forums about this wondered if it really is worth buying if you havent seen it? I loved aliens and think the film looks good but worried it may look dated or have problems working on my machine properly, samsung 709, with the extended branching? Any opinions would be appreciated

Buy this film immediately - it`s fab. The effects haven`t dated much at all and the acting is superb. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in particular are excellent. GO GET IT - You won`t be disappointed...

I agree - excellent film. The ending isn`t as bad as some films I`ve seen...

A brilliant film throughout. I was at first reluctant to buy it cos i didnt like the look of the cover but i did and after watching it, i have no regrets.
Remember Crimson Tide, U571, Deep Rising? Well this movie is 10x better. James Camerons third best film (after titanic and T2)
Absolutely brilliant. Tense, good dialogue. Well worth buying. I didnt see this movie before and it was a risk that paid off

Special note - always ensure people who say the ending is crap have actually seen the special edition.

the theatrical version was gutted of a main story thread so it just went "plop" at the end when it should`ve gone" WAHEY!", hence ppl who hated the film often love it after seeing the special edition.

oh and the non-anamopric print holds up perfectly fine

This one of my favoourite movies. It really bring Ed Harris into his own. The plot is reasonabley well thought out, not too many holes and the script is pretty good too. If you`re going to get it and have multi region get either R1 because R2 has the rat scene cut and seems to be missing all the trailers that have been noted on most easter egg sites.

dont` get R1!! the picture difference between non-anamorphic R1 and R4 is pretty big.

all you lose is three trailers to other films *shrug*

ickle yoda,

The branching does cause problems on older 709 firmware. If you have (or can upgrade to) firmware version 3.32 or later, it`ll be fine.
