Personal DVD Viewing LOG w/e Sunday 19th Sept

A slightly better week than last week -

Full Alert - Ringo Lam`s Hong Kong version of Heat, just as good as the original and probably Lam`s best film.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Live in New York City - Bruce showing why he`s `The Boss`.

St John`s Wort - Dull, ugly looking (shot on digital video) Japanese horror. Can`t think of a good thing to say about it, simply awful.

The Sum Of All Fears - Jack Ryan gets younger but the films stay just as entertaining. One of the most consistent film series even if chronologically they make no sense.

The Avengers 1966 Disc 2 - Four episodes and a big improvement on last weeks episodes.

Alias Season 1 - Episodes 2-4 of this excellent spy series. Having just watched 24 seasons 1 & 2 again recently I found they didn`t stand up well to repeat viewings, relying to much on plot twists that seem silly and contrived. This on the other hand is just as entertaining second time around, maybe because it never takes itself too seriously.

So what`s everyone else been watching then?

Raging Bull - First time I had seen this and it was good if a little depressing

The Cooler - Liked this, Alec Baldwin was very good

Alien v Predator - OH NO!!!, didnt expect it to be up to much but this was total Krapola

Tombstone - Great film. This is how a western should be made, much better imo than the snorefest that was Open Range

Father Ted season 3 - funny as hell, specially the Speed episode

Star Wars Trilogy + Bonus disc Done a mini review on another thread.

Evil Dead 2:- Still the coolest classic horror/comedy movie, still notches ahead of Shaun of the dead.

Excellent week for me, I started by watching all my Hitchcock DVDs and then ordered another 6 from Play with my final 10% voucher:

Shadow of a Doubt - Excellent Hitchcock movie with his trademark tension and black humour.

Suspicion - Brilliant.

Family Plot - His last movie but definitely not his weakest.

Frenzy - more like a British crime/thriller than most of his movies.

Marnie - Sean Connery is excellent in this terrific movie.

The Trouble with Harry - A one trick pony but thoroughly enjoyable.

North by Northwest - One of his best, Cary Grant has never been better.

Rear Window - Great movie.

Vertigo - Kim Novak has rather severe eyebrows but this is an absolute classic.

Psycho - My favourite Hitchcock movie and one of the best serial killer movies.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) - Very good thriller - the 1956 remake is on order.

The Birds - The bird attacks are still terrifying - brilliant.

Strangers on a Train - Keeps the tension going right to the end.

Zoolander - I found myself laughing and then wondering why! Worth seeing anyway.

The Dancer Upstairs - John Malkovich proves that he is as good a director as he is an actor although I don't know why he didn't say it was set in Peru and was about the Shining Path.

Underworld - An uneasy mix of Matrix-type action and a plot from Blade. Rubbish but it gave my speakers a work out!

Back to the Future - Has aged a bit but I could not keep the smile off my face - fantastic.

Back to the Future Part II - Not as good as Part I but still brilliant.

Back to the Future Part III - The weakest of the three but a fitting end to the trilogy.

Kiss of the Dragon - Better than I was expecting with some good moves from Jet Li.

Jackie Brown (again) - Still brilliant; Tarantino on top form.

Ghost World - A wonderful movie and the one comic book adaptation I really like.

The Last Samurai - Aside from some good swordplay, a waste of two hours. Ken Watanabe is the one saving grace.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - I think this DVD is missing some of the running time (52 minutes instead of over 70).

The Last Man on Earth - Excellent vampire/zombie movie which doesn't disappoint at the end.

Eddie Izzard - Dress To Kill - His best gig after Definite Article.

Eddie Izzard - Circle - The man is brilliant; Britain's best stand up.

Eddie Izzard - Sexie - Saw this live and it is incredible how much new material he writes through a tour.

The Terror - Not half bad. A young Jack Nicholson in a early Coppola movie.

Red Dwarf Series 1 (commentary) - Not the best commentary around but funny and they shut up let you watch the best bits!

One Night at McCool's - Pretty good especially for the price it was at DVD Soon!

A mediocre week ...

50 First Dates - sounds a good plot on paper but Sandler over `sandlifies` the goods imho. Still, my wife & 2 daughters loved it...

Troll 1 / Troll 2 - MGM twofer. Bad `80`s movies - but not quite bad enough to be good...

Tenchi Muyo in Love - feature film of the popular anime. Soundtrack by ex-Tangerine Dream man, Christopher Franke which is rather good. Nice.

Audrey Rose - early (1976) Anthony Hopkins thriller dealing with re-incarnation. A Robert Wise Directed piece - a fine movie.

Die Monster Die - Boris Karloff does the `Monster Mash` voice in this fantastic hybrid gothic horror / sci-fi schlock movie from 1965. Though an MGM `cheapie` it`s a very fine print...

Sleeping Beauty - the Disney one that`s petrified several generations of children with the most evil witch of them all...

Bruce Almighty - OK, unforgivable tripe maybe, but it was rainy and I let the kids choose. Nuff said...

Urusei Yatsura - Disc 1 Series 1 - recently issued UK version of classic Japanes anime TV show. The title song gets translated as something like: `Add weird and weird together to make even weirder...`. Very entertaining!

Must try harder!! ;)
