Its a bit subjective, who decides who is a movie star, one persons star is just a crap actor to someone else.

Maybe to some extent but you couldn`t call people like Wayne, Stewart, Lancaster, Mitchum, Heston and Fonda anything but Movie Stars but De Niro, great actor though he is (or maybe that should be was) is NOT a movie star. It comes down to personality and when not on screen De Niro hasn`t got one (possibly what makes him such a great actor) while Wayne etc have huge personalities but (possibly) less acting ability.
