Page 1 of OVER-RATED!!
DVDs & Films Forum
What so called "classic" films do you think are SO over-rated?
Here are some of mine:
TERMINATOR - alright in 1963 or whenever it was made, cheese today
STAR WARS - Good maybe, but people get TOO carried away!
STAR TREK - Any of them. A geek haven
GOODFELLAS - Same old, same old!
HIGHLANDER - a jock spanish , a frog jock?? zzzzzzz!
Where to stop....
Whats yours? Go on, upset people!
Two of the most over-rated films of recent years = The Usual Suspects and Fight Club (especially Fight Club).
Star Wars Return of the jedi one of the best films ever.
Fight CLub and Usual Suspects were really clever films to watch and they make you think. They were also realistic. I dont think they were over rated as they were top films and they deserve the reputation they get. I havent seen goodfellas so cant comment. Highlander was good but not that good and it aint rated that highly either. It aint in no ones top ten
All totally relative, and 100% subjective.
Time is a funny thing. I`m sure a lot of people probably thought photographs were a bit odd when they saw their first ever one !
Similarly, throughout the ages, people will be affected by different films in different ways. Doesn`t make any particular film better than any other.
World full of people = someone out there who will like an obscure 120 minute documentary of a spider trying to climb out of a bath. I know it`s my favourite film (OK it`s on 8mm, but what the heck - I wonder if George Lucas would be interested...) but no-one else is gonna agree...
This thread will either end up with a list of films that people hate, that won`t mean anythng to anyone apart from the posters, or it`ll result in a real, good, strong debate on the question "What makes a good film?"
You decide, guys...
There will probably be people here that will disagree but I think that Gladiator is over-rated, I just found it boring and over-long.
Plus the CGI effects of Rome were shoddy.
RE: OVER-RATED!!
changing the subject a little - unbreakable the dvd WILL have deleted scenes on it.
as for your comments on Terminator - disgraceful! blasphemy!
Have to agree with clayts on this one - its all subjective - i happen to think "Usual Suspects" is a damn good film and one of my favourites... at the time... Its also dependant on the mood you are in - if i just want fodder i`ll watch a cgi/blast `em of the screen/what script type of film (Bugs in particular) - but then the first 20minutes of Private Ryan makes me shiver with the realism... you pays ya money...

I agree, it`s subjective (isn`t everything?), but it`s still worth hearing other people`s opinions. Good films are heavily praised by those that have seen them and this is often enough to turn you against it, because they go too far. "It`s Hilarious!" was the message concerning Meet the Parents. Eagerly I watched the movie and it let me down a little, not because it`s bad (It`s quite enjoyable), but all the hyperbole surrounding it sets you up for a fall. Spinal Tap had a similar affect on me (my sides did not split!). The opposite is true for "under-rated" films, you expect to dislike them so you`re often pleasantly surprised.
The English Patient
Billy Elliot
Why oh why did these films get awards?

"AII Subjective".....AGREED.
But, Jesus the most overated film must be Gladiator. Okay, the opening scenes were very, very good. But that all gave way to a really weak
and predictable cliche revenge storyline, with a pansy Roman ruler who was about as threatening and ruthless as Graham Norton !
Julius would be turning in his grave.
It was agonisingly long, and the digital effects although clever appeared, well.............digital !
A great shame because the hype was amazing and the trailers looked
good but it was lame. The most succesful movie award, yes. The best
movie, no. Although I suppose there wasnt any competition.
All the Best.
