£18 is the Customs threshold - keep all your orders below that, and you won`t be stung for duty.

Does anyone know if ticking the £36 gift box still works?

What do you mean? You can still get "gifts" through customs under the value of £36 but the number of retailers who actually mark the product as a gift is ever decreasing. I am beginning to suspect that they have made a crackdown on this method.
AFAIK dddhouse still do this, dvdpacific are sort of safe to use under £36 as well.
Sites like dvdsoon, cd-wow, play.com, amazon.com/ca are likely to get hit. With amazon, I think if you pay a bit extra, they can mark it as a gift.

The £36 "gift" threshold can only be used if the person sending the item is sending it for personal reasons (i.e. it can`t be a retailer). I remember you used to be able to mark "gift" on most websites but now only a few because it was a loophole that has probably been tightened up....Gordon Brown you W****R!
Erm...
....says it all really :/
