Reservoir Dogs: Which Region is better?

TOM ROBERTS (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 6th May 2004, 13:55

I am thinking about buying Reservoir Dogs when it comes out on 7th of June on Region 2. However i have seen the Region 1 version of Reservoir Dogs for £8.99 but the extra features seem slightly different to the extras features for the region 1 release.I was wondering which version of Reservoir Dogs is the better version to buy in terms of extras. How good are the extras on the Region 1 version compared to the new region 2 release?

Seem about the same from the list on play.com. The only difference I can see is this -
Quote:
Select scene audio commentary featuring the cast, the crew, and the critics

On the region 1 but not listed on region 2. This is on the German and Australian releases though so I think it will be on there.
I`ve got the region 1 and its an excellent DVD. If you can get it for £8.99 go for it, it`s OOP now I think. It will be a few moths before the region 2 comes down to that price.

The original R2 release is superior because it has an extra line of dialogue that has been cut out of the R1 and the new R2 release. Not sure which line it is but this is what I have heard. Not seen the film for a while so will have to dig it out and watch it again.

Think this (from dvdcompare.net) is what you`r refering to-

R1 (America - Artisan, 10th Anniversary Edition) - No censor cuts, but this release IS missing some dialogue bits. The missing bits and exact times are as follows:
-0:28:32 MR. WHITE: "I think he just passed out."
(-0:38:23 MR. BLONDE: "Joe" => This line is NOT missing, but is a very quiet mumble.)
(-0:51:33 MARVIN NASH: "I haven`t been looking." => This line is NOT missing, but is a very quiet mumble.) / MR. PINK "Shut the..." => There has been no evidence that this line was ever said, so this one is unconfirmed.

Picture and sound are much better on this version though plus a ton of extras. You have to decide what`s more important. I`ve got both as I`ve got the region 2 Tarantino box set but I only watch the region 1.

Yep, the original R2 edition has better video quality than the R1 CE.

Found this at dvdtherapy.com -
Quote:
The Region 1 Special Edition of this film was controversial, in that the picture was deemed to be completely at odds with Quentin Tarantino`s intended look to the film. It was said to be badly washed out, and lacking in contrast. Having watched this release before, I do feel that although some criticism is probably warranted, the faults with the transfer are relatively minor and - with a little picture tweaking - certainly aren`t enough to lessen the impact of the film.

This newly produced Region 2 DVD, when compared with the U.S. release, does indeed present the film with stronger colours and a punchier contrast - blacks seem a little more defined, and the famous scene at the start where the gang walk alongside the brick wall reveals a much bolder colour palette. However, the picture also has a slightly softer appearance. This makes it appear slightly more `film-like`, but also seems to sacrifice a little of the fine detail that the US disc possesses. This in turn does mean that edge enhancement can be less noticeable. To be honest, there really isn`t a massive difference between the two transfers - when looked at in a direct side-by-side comparison, the Region 2 version`s superior contrast and colour presentation do show up, but it also looks (very) slightly less defined…without such a comparison I don`t believe that owners of either release would be too disappointed.

There is plenty of evidence that Mr. Pink says that line, not least the fact that he says it on the R1 SE! ;)

I deceided to buy the region 1 version of Reservoir Dogs as I cant be bother to wait a month for the region 2 version also the bargain of it only costing £8.99 is too good to refuse!
I got Region 1 copies of Reservoir Dogs and The Running Man for £21.98 for the both from DVDWORLDUSA.COM!

Thanks
