Ooh, Miss Jones/ Dont wake Spooner...

jc808 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 26th November 2003, 09:02

Theres a review on this site for the Rising Damp 4DVD boxset (all 4 series) but the reviewer (a Mr. Mark Oates) seemed a little on the vague side as to wether it had been deleted, was not to be released, etc

Does anyone know the coup on this Boxset?

Cheers, jc808

I was on the vague side because I don`t know for sure. Some retailers have deleted the title, there`s reason to believe WHSmiths have managed to cut an exclusivity deal with Granada/VCI, but the firms themselves don`t talk to lowly reviewers like me. :/

There is speculation that the boxset was withdrawn due to the episode "Stand Up And Be Counted" containing libellous material. The set was exclusive to Whsmiths, and they have now removed any mention of it from their website so it cannot be obtained that way.As for the high street it`s possible some stores will still have it,like the one in Aberdeen that another forum member said had loads of them.My local store (Yarmouth) no longer have the boxset in stock.Hopefully somebody who knows more about this will help clear up the confusion.

Its really a mystery,as it was originally on PLAY and MVC sites, but then removed. The aforementioned episode could be the problem as it was missing from the `complete` series 1 dvd and vhs.
I saw it on a site yesterday with a release date of 2010.More likely Jan 2003,maybe with the offending episode removed and the missing Xmas special put back.I got mine on ebay so some people got them

An update on the rising damp 4 dvd collection. I bought a set in Whsmith`s in Bluewater, Kent yesterday, and also spotted copies at the Lakeside WHSmith as well. The pack is `exclusive` to WHSmith, at £34.99.

Includes the "Stand up and be counted episode on series 1, along with 7 episodes of series 2 and 3, 6 episodes for series 4.

Hope this helps! :)

Well I watched `Stand up and be counted` last night, but it cannot be construed as libellous now as they have digitally masked out the labour candidates name from a poster and changed the closing credits so that no name is given there either. There doesn`t seem to be any cuts to dialogue, but if there are then they are undetectable without a script in front of you. The running time of the episode is actually longer than previous one!

It is a poor set really - but the only one available. The packaging is robust enough, but there are no animated menus or scene selections(!) the video and sound quality are merely fair (nothing like the quality of the `playback` releases); poorly researched, the episodes in series one are out of order and the `Christmas Special` is apparently fogotten.

Roll on the ultimate edition!

Despite early appearances on the PLAY and MVC sites,it was removed-and removed from Smiths site too, which added to confusion.
However, although not in my local store, umpteen sightings seem to confirm this set is definitely a Smiths In store only exclusive.
When SUABC was shown on C4 a few years ago the masking was also on their showing.Anyone know the name thats blanked out?So why was it missed from the earlier "Complete series 1" dvd and vhs?Luckily for those with dvd recorders,C5 are showing the missing Xmas episode on Boxing Day.I remember the C4 showing and it was a pretty poor episode anyway
