peter parker (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 31st May 2003, 22:51

According to one of these threads someone has mentioned the r2 version of temple of doom will probably be cut....so can anyone answer the following....1,whats cut.......2,why is it cut.......3,i own the laser disk version and as far as i am aware its the full movie, so why would they cut the d.v.d...
i understand that officialy nothing has been confirmed but it seems a little silly to have to edit any of these movies, or is someone talking out of there arse..?

"1,whats cut"

The scene where the dude pulls the other dudes heart out. You SHOULD see his hand go right into his chest, and PULL out his heart, and then you SEE the wound close up again.

",why is it cut"

Because the BBFC are knobs. Also, I think the studio wouldn`t like a 15 (or possibly 18) Indy film when the other two are PG (or at least the first one was when it was released).

Temple of Doom was first certificated by the BBFC 31/5/1984 at the height of the video nasty panic. They took one look at the movie and told Paramount it would get the new 18 rating if it wasn`t cut. The studio trimmed one minute, six seconds from the picture, mainly around the scenes in the Temple as Chewie says. The BBFC nearly waived the cuts for a boxed video set, but by that point Spielberg was intent on bowldlerising his own stuff (like ET) and the cuts remained. As they`re now "official" cuts (by the director), I`d be surprised if they turned up in either the new R1 or R2 sets.

Presumably the original cut was available (at some point) on VHS and LaserDisc in the USA - if so, there`s going to be a *big* stink if the R1 DVD is less complete.

Besides, didn`t Spielberg have to relent on the `bowdlerised` ET DVD?

Hi all, just 2 questions for you.

1. Which is the best version to get, r1, 2 etc.

2. If it is region 3 or 4 do you know any sites that take switch as havn`t got a visa? I just use play at the moment for r1 and 2.

Would realy like to get the un-cut version is possible.

Thanks in advance, Ger.

Good point about ET, Mike. I`d genuinely hope that a full print is submitted to the BBFC for certification, and maybe either the BBFC will slacken its corsets or Paramount will accept a 12 or 15 rating for the set rather than a PG.

Gerald, I`d go for the R2 set whatever the decision. Quite apart from the debit/credit card business, and I personally think debit cards are riskier for online shopping anyway, you might get stung for VAT& Customs.

1:06s cuts for both cinema and video

"Cuts to a close-up of a heart being ripped from the chest and the subsequent self healing of the chest wound."

"The deletion of the line `Leave him alone you bastards` when the Chinese kid is about to be whipped"

"Deletion of the Chinese Kid burning a guard`s stomach with a flaming torch (and hence discovering an ability to heal)"

"The sequence in which a sacrifice victim is being lowered into the fiery pit has been shortened and set to different music."

"Cut to the first 1s or 2s from the shot of his fall in order to delete the image of his head hitting the side of the cliff."

In the UK today, the uncut version would now be considered as 12 or even 12/15 borderline.

The PG version is still considered to be one of the stronger PGs ever certificated by the BBFC and has generated more complaints than most over the years.

The recent BBC showing is confirmed to be the cut version. The BBC in fact consulted with the BBFC to ensure that they showed the officially sanctioned cut version.

If Paramount doesn`t want the box set upgraded to either a 12 or a 15, then chances are they will stick with the PG version of the film.

Speilberg didn`t relent to a butchered E.T. He thought that the SFX could do with an update, and also felt that the guns were inapropriate.

He is so kiddie friendly now, that he said on a documentary that if he made Close Encounters now, it would be very different, because as he is now a family man, the character wouldn`t go off on a spaceship and leave his family behind, or let his obssesion with the UFO get to a point that it would tear his family apart.

So if Close Encounters was made today the film that comes closer to mind is Signs. And that was a pile of s***e.

That has nothing to do with it actually. It`s all about principles, and I don`t want some old censor-geezer at the BBFC telling me what I can and can`t see. So I`ll be going to which ever Region is uncut (hopefully R4).

Agree with Chewie. Also the cut scenes are integral to the plot. It explains how Short Round knows how to free Indy from the `waking death` thingy, also makes more clear why Indy should be so worried when Mola Ram goes for his heart as they are fighting on the collapsed bridge.
